Some information on the plan to hold a self help training camp to Slovakia for the World University Orienteering Champs.
Background
This is not a British Squad camp.
It has been identified that the week beginning the 29th May fits well into the Squad/International calendar.
This follows on immediately from the Scottish Champs weekend, which is the final selection race for the WUOC Team.
The camp will be self help and self funded.
People may wish to find funding from sources such as SEDS and the British Squad support fund.
I am offering to co-ordinate plans for those of you who wish to prepare for WUOC by training in the terrain around Kosice in Slovakia, the WUOC centre. I will also come on the camp to help organise things and enjoy the training, as may Jon Musgrave.
It is important to realise that this is a self help camp and I don't intend to run myself ragged tending to every want and need. I'll be there to take a lead in organising, you will all be expected to help make things happen.
The camp is open to anyone, primarily as an opportunity to prepare for WUOC. Whilst it is intended to be relaxed and enjoyable it is for people who want to train, gain experience and prepare seriously.
That comment does not mean you have to be a cert. for WUOC it is about attitude rather than ability.
Plan
Dates
• 29th May - Monday - Group to depart Edinburgh - Luton - Budapest on Monday, after the Scottish Champs. On arrival collect hire cars and drive 200 miles to Kosice.
• 30th May - 4th June - Tuesday to Sunday. 6 days of relaxed training in the Kosice area using both the Karst and Continental styles of terrain to be used for WUOC. It is possible that the Hungarian team will be training at the same time and it would be good to share some sessions.
A race on the Sunday would be good.
The major competition Thermenland 2006 is being held 3 - 5th June but is in Austria this year, over 350 miles from Kosice - too far for one race, and doing 3 races would be at the expense of half the training - so my recommendation is to stay in Kosice and train.
Accommodation can be arranged in the WUOC accommodation - Half board. Self catering lunches.
• 5th June - Monday - Return Budapest - Luton - Edinburgh (as appropriate)
Costs.
Flights - Easyjet fares are not available for May/June yet but indications are that if you get an early booking it should be around £80 return Edinburgh - Luton - Budapest.
Accommodation - Initial contact with the WUOC organisers suggests that half board will cost around £100 for the week.
Car hire - for the week approx £55 per person, depending on numbers.
Other costs - Group costs; fuel, self catering lunches. Personal costs; ice cream, pivo, snacks.
Probable cost £250 - £300.
Other
Numbers - Will be determined by car loads. Could be 9 or 12 or 15 athletes.
Attendance - first come first served - See "Commitment" below, you don't count until you have committed.
Interest -
Please let me know immediately by e-mail if you would like to join this camp either:
• Definitely
• Probably
• Possibly.
Knowing these numbers will help me to plan and understand costs when it comes to asking for money.
Notification must be by e-mail.
If you don't notify me by e-mail you will not be updated as plans proceed.
Commitment
Easyjet summer ticket sales become available at the end of March.
To commit yourself to the camp you must
• Buy your own tickets to Budapest
• Send me a copy of the confirmation
• Send me the money for accommodation (amount to be informed).
At the end of April I will ask for hire car money and any other money.
If you drop out of the camp at any stage I will do my best to refund money that can be recouped but cannot guarantee that this will be possible.
Enjoyment
I'm looking forward to a great week of training and an entertaining time in Slovakia. This should be a fun and relaxed camp in an interesting part of the world.
cheers
Andy

The best, cheap route I've found is Ryanair, Glasgow Prestwick to Krakow in Poland.
The assumption is that you will all be up at the Scottish Champs because it is the final WUOC selection race.
This will be the route we take.
Please book flights
Outbound: Tuesday 30th May 2006 - 06:55
Return: Tuesday 6th June 2006 - 11:10
Currently priced at £44 (having gone up from £34 at the start of the week)
If you are English then go buy quick
The Scots are getting paid by SEDS so can afford to pay a little more for flights (sorry Jase)
This will involve folk stayin in Edinburgh on Monday
An early start on Tuesday 30th May - cars to the airport and leave them there - volunteers to take cars needed.
Hiring cars from Krakow airport and what should be a scenic drive through the Tatras mountains to Kosice.
Returning to Krakow on Monday 5th June - with an opportunity perhaps for a mountain run in the Tatras.
Overnight in Krakow which is a nice city fo a meal and a beer.
ACTION - let me know when you have your flight booked
Duncan - you should come, you can't sit on your arse at home for a whole month before JWOC - you don't have to train yourself to death.
Scotia - dunno what the best approach is for you ??, will you still be oot in the land of Nog by May ?
If you hate this route (though I don't think you'll find a cheaper option) then you can find your own way to Kosice.
Any issue let me know
QUESTION - answer immediately please to my home e-mail - andy@kitchinnet.plus.com
Would you prefer to have half board accommodation - breakfast and evening meal, or B&B and to eat out at a variety of retaurants in the evening ? - prices are East European so similar to Lithuania or such.
cheers
