to cheer you all up on a friday afternoon (its almost the weekend!), check out the absolutely disasterous leg from the trossachs on sunday (not exactly the straight line route!)
Complete headless chicken act where the mind goes blank and you just run/dander aimlessly wherever your legs take you.
To be fair i didn't have a compass, but even still i could have at least tried to relocate better! Ah well, y'live and learn.
disasterous orienteering legs volume 1.
the original plan (ha!) was to tank it out to towards 9, head down between 10 & 11, head south under the 2 big crags then in across the marsh. Somehow all that (and me!) got a bit lost
Looking at it now i can't believe i didn't get it together at a number of points along the way, the big crags between 10 & 17, the marsh between 16 & 17. I had no idea what was going on tho to be honest!
Can anyone tell me where i went wrong?

where did you go wrong?
i would guess the origin of the mistake was switching off during the first part of the leg. you must have still been switched off when you went down that big hill and you obviously didn't look at your compass for a good few minutes. Can you remember what was going on in your mind at the time? or just before then?
The route you chose there is a lot going on at the beginning so you need to be switched on. Having a quick glance i too would have chosen the flat marshy area under the southern of the 2 large crags from which to attack the control but i would have chosen a much straighter route to get to that point. The trossachs was tough whichever way you went so you might as well go straightish and just avoid silly climb. I would have dropped diagonally down the steep slope thru some bits of green, climbed onto the wide spur and contoured/climbed into that big flat area. then you've got 100m easyish running due south to recover a bit, pick out the knoll ahead of you and start visualising no. 16.
ah so easy in hindsight!!
if only i could've executed that successfully on more than 3 of my controls on sunday

Direct.. Theres a thought - I had a similar leg(same control) - and tried the same plan, getting away with it.
Did not fancy that descent.. but regret not going that way now.
