your head is saying 'i'm having a great race here, come on!!' and then you push it a bit too hard, let the positive emotions take control and before you know it you've missed your next control
This happened to me at the 25manna shortdistance recently. But I am trying to change my attitude and taking a tip from theirry (and steven sylvester - gb squad psychologist)..
The result should never enter your mind. Theirry says that honestly he never thinks of the result only about the map and perfect orienteering. Thoughts of win or lose should only creep in after you have collapsed over the finish line. Absorb yourself totally in being masterful in your orienteering. Training brain and body for the pursuit of mastery rather than for the gold medal. Even in the big championships or razmatazz spectator type races when win-lose thoughts might enter your mind, think about just orienteering 100% the entire course and showing how masterful you can be.
