We are kicking around the idea of creating a full-time job for an "outdoor and adventurous activities leader" based in my school. We are just trying to think whether this is sensible at the moment so could do with some advice from those who have seen such jobs (or done them!) and anyone who might be looking for something along these lines.
We need the person to-
1. Run the Duke of Edinburgh programme for up to 200 students at a time
2. Offer a programme of activities for students to include as much as possible of rock climbing, orienteering, expeditions, mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing, horse riding, kayaking, team building, high and low ropes and who knows what else. Some of these offered within PE lessons and others as extra-curricular
3. To maintain and develop equipment and facilities (e.g. manage compasses, tents and maps, creating assault courses, mapping for orienteering etc)
4. Liaise with clubs, local authority, centres etc..
Thoughts are to employ as an "unqualified teacher" - annual salary would be up to £25,000 for very well qualified and experienced person - probably more like £20,000 for most folks. Work hours would include some evenings and weekends and equate to 36-38 hours per school week with some flexible working in school holidays. Might involve working with us and some partner schools. Could easily allow someone time for their own trips and training.
As I said, this is just an idea floating around at the moment. Is it a good idea? Would it be an attractive job? Any advice or views?
Advice please - creating a coaching job

Me too - if I was about 30 years younger......
Go for it Chris - it sounds sensational - think of all those fantastic opportunities the kids will be able to have
I only ever went on one school trip ..... a day trip to Gloucester in 1966.... and i've been spending a large part of my adult life trying to catch up on pocket adventures but I think most of my contemporaries never bothered
Luckily my kids go to a great state school where many of these things are available to them through a very committed staff and at very reasonable cost

qualifications
The problem I guess you may face is that this person will be required to be qualified in any sport they lead. This area was tightened up a lot for "adventure" sports after the Lyme Bay tragedy but unfortunately I'm not up on the exact details.

there would also be a lot of issues of child protection, and the person would have to have loads of first aid certificates. amazing job, im sure there are plenty of adventurous people out there with good personalitites and who know how to deal with kids and make things interesting. doubt many orienteers fill this catogory though.

Hi nope sport
just been browsing, don't do it veryoften, usually too busy.
The job spec seems fantastic to those not involved in the outdoors!
1. think of what your greatest need is. Is it keeping kit in order & arranging the programme, or is it delivering the programme?
2. If the answer is the keeping kit & arranging prog, then you need a technician.
If it's delivering the prog, then you need superman/woman.
3. a technician can be trained to keep kit in good order, have a bombproof system of recording & logging the use of every item of equipment (by that I mean even the loo paper) and can liaise with the necessary professionals.
4. an instructor would have to have the necessary qualifications for each activity, plus either be employed by your school or have suitably high qualifications & experience to be able to get /afford a personal insurance policy to cover every possible situation (ie Perkins Slade). The person would need to be employed by your school too because otherwise he/she would need to have an AALA license, and they are not cheap, something like £500 per year per activity, plus the annual inspection fee.
So think about it further, it may be cheaper to hire in your professionals when you need them and use their kit instead of the thousands that you would have to fork out for your own!!
