I have a chance to teach O within PE to Year 9 students (about 13-14 y.o.)next year. Five 2-hour sessions. Very mixed group - some will be keen and sporty, some won't - almost none will know what O is.
I have access to the usual books etc. and I have some ideas of my own already, but any advice (or lesson plans!) much appreciated.
It is probably practical to do one "off-site" session - there is a reasonable permanent course not too far away - and the school is mapped so that probably takes care of another: it is the first three "skills" sessions that need the most thought - 2 hours is a long time for Year 9s!

As no-one's come back with any answers, if you haven't already, try contacting your local development officer or Hilary Palmer or Pauline Olivant at BOF.
I'm afraid I have no experience of teaching teenagers.

I think Chris is the head at the school where my mum teaches (hello Chris), and she seems to have volunteered Duncan Archer and I to go in and run a session for the kids, and introduce them to some elite orienteers. Details haven't filtered through to me yet, so I'm not sure if this will be part of the lessons Chris mentions or not, but if it all works out we'll try to portray a good image of orienteering! Duncan is a coach so may have some cunning ideas, and I am just enthusiastic!
Just a thought - there was talk of a video being produced by some people up in Edinburgh I think. Would this be suitable to show to, say, Year 9's, as an enticement into the sport? Has anything happened yet?

Thanks for the replies:
Yes Pippa's Mum does work at my school! She did volunteer you and I said that we would be delighted if you could come sometime, and we would be happy to be very flexible with times and format of a training event - we have a small but enthusiastic group of students who would turn out to meet you. (The same ones who are regularly going to local events etc.) I also said that we would (of course) pay decent expenses - I hope she told you that!
The lessons are a bit different - 5 weeks, two hours each week for Y9 core PE so have to cover all abilities and interest ranges of students. They all do a "rotation" through the year around various sports and activities, but each rotation has to include some general fitness work. This particular rotation will officially be the "outdoor and adventurous" stuff and I have the idea of using O skills to open the door to such things as Duke of Edinburgh training and simply being "out there". The lessons will be supplemented by squad training and events outside lesson time for students who want to do more "proper" orienteering. Local clubs SO and MV have been really welcoming and helpful so it has been easy to get students from a little taste of O in school to go and enjoy a Saturday or Sunday event not too far away.
The DVD sounds very interesting and I would be happy to send a blank and some money - it might be vital for a very rainy day. Let me know how, or I could easily wait for the proper "pack" - no hurry.
Since I posted my request, a copy of "Teaching Orienteering" by Carol McNeill et. al. has arrived - what a brilliant book! I thoroughly recommend it for any orienteer and especially for any coach who has not used it - I have adapted a few ideas for much needed personal training and there is an absolute wealth of good coaching and training stuff in it. You have to adapt for the particular group you will be taking and what terrain etc. is available, but it largely solves the problem.
Thanks again.

Chris, sorry not to have joined in before. Had assumed that you already would have Carol's book. If you look back to "Inspire me" topic (on nopesport 30th April) you'll see lots of favourite ideas from young/not so young nope posters.
btw, because coaching threads get a bit wordy (or p'haps that's just me), is there any support for a separate coaches forum on nopesport, where we could chat without cluttering up discussion forum?
My yr 10 twins, in a school with lot of O on the curriculum, say it's often the less "sporty" year 9s who find O really interesting, whereas ace netball/ soccer stars can't see the point. Can think of lots of potential ways of pulling soccer/netball balls into teaching O, but haven't actually tried them out!
