This analog version of Pac-man is being developed in NYU's Interactive Telecommunications graduate program, in order to explore what happens when games are removed from their "little world" of tabletops, televisions and computers and placed in the larger "real world" of street corners, and cities.

Just looks like you need a fairly regular street pattern, so I'm sure it's possible in any decent-sized town/city. Although sounds like it could be something for those with some of their free minutes to use up on their mobiles...

and add in 3G and you get live video as well, put it on a big screen and you've got something for spectators. saying that, could that be done in 'O'? obviously, a runner couldn't take a phone round with them but it could be put on a control or something? would be much less discreet than someone standing in the forest.

WOC 2001 in Tampere the runners had to take phones round with them.... but majority weren't switched on because cost was to high

don't think it would work in birmingham,,, the streets here all go in straight lines (long ones at that!), and its not exactly grid-ish enuff. Well i don't think it is. Sheffield might be a good place...
