Yes, yes, I know.
We shouldn't really give you this information but the Technical committee insisted we give competitors info concerning the Jar and Candle course.
You may enter on the day, before or after your main run
1) The course is approx 900m long, with negligible climb. There will be 10 controls.
2) It will be traditional pin punching, thus giving you a shed load of entertainment whilst you:- hold the map, the 'light', the control card, the punch. . . . . and your compass. Remembering, of course, not to trip up and slash your wrist on the broken jar, or worse, set light to the forest. Wouldn't go down too well with everyone else.
3) You will be supplied with a jar containing a well-secured candle, plus a box of matches. Each 'light unit' will have it's own rain-proof cover and string/wire (not shown in the pics) with which to carry it. Home built units by 'smart alecs' are strictly 'verbotten'
There will be members of the 'Light Police' patrolling the forest to ensure that there are no "moments of weakness" with the back-up light, "sabotage", or "gang mentality"
The bog standard unit has been tested and gives a suprising amount of light (unfortunately !) If I've done this right, there's an image below attachment=0]jars1.jpg[/attachment]

Oh Grubby - I am that gorgeous girlie - do you think you could supply an obedient dwarf to push the trolley for me?

Good stuff. But what about the map scale? Apparently orienteers cant read a 1:10000 map even in the day.
For every winner, there are dozens of losers. Odds are you're one of them.

What about the map? Obvious.
It will be the 1970 survey, no updates, 2.5 inches to the mile, black and white, printed on water absorbent non waterproof paper, water soluble ink, no map bag.

Seriously, I think the night champs would be improved if BOF invested in a stock of standard identical Petzl head-torches, and competitors were obliged to use those only. They'd be hired out as part of the entry fee, in the same way as e-punch cards.

Mrs H - Are you quite sure you haven't upset me, or locked one of my wood-working friends in his shed or cupboard under the stairs, recently ??
As for the dwarf . . . . .
DM - Excellent idea ! If only . . . . .
Rebbid - Scale is 1:4000, more or less
IanD - It's not a view I share but I suspect you might have strong support. Would it be from diehard night O lovers, or those who are good during the day, but only 'dabble' at night ? I suspect Petzls would only come about if a Committee member made it their life's work.
If they were obligatory, I would still enter, inspite of the fact that I'd feel vulnerable running hard down a track, without enough light to see the pothole before it's too late.

Look - I made sure Mr H posed no serious threat to you at the last night O by bringing 2 left shoes so he had to run in his "Crocs" It's really not my fault that he still managed to beat you
(Oh dear - perhaps I shouldn't have reminded you of that!)

Re: British Night Champs - Light Specifications
Many years ago hubby organised a night event on Addington hills near Croydon. At that time we had a mad Norweigian who ran round the course using a candle in an old enamel mug!! He wasn't known as Erik the Red for nothing. Wonder what he's up to now?
