I have read twice in the last week that the band British Sea Power are fans of orienteering, yet I'm pretty sure I've never come across them. They're originally from West Yorkshire and Cumbria, but met at Reading Uni and now live in Brighton. Has anyone come across them whilst out o'ing or is this just a total fabrication on behalf of the music press?
This is obviously not Tuesday afternoon back to work post festive season work avoidance. Oh no.
Scott Wilkinson, Martin Noble, Neil Wilkinson, Matthew Wood
It worries me that they tend to be references with regards to binoculars and bridwatching, and the oh so cool music press think that orienteering is one and the same. Bleurgh.

Re: Have you seen these men?!
Similar sounding beginning, wrong word? - maybe they were after "ornithology"...
Or maybe both, with the far-too-common "stereotype" of orienteering rearing its ugly head again:

But BSP's leisure interests are about as far removed from the traditonal rock'n'roll lifestyle as you could get - ornithology, rambling, Ordnance Survey maps, the flora and fauna of the English countryside and forgotten coastal villages all hold an attraction. They would rather be heading off to the woods with rucksacks on their backs than throwing televisions out of hotel windows.

They're playing Glasgow on the 26th.
I wonder if they have any free time during the day...

Scott Wilkinson and Matthew Wood went to my secondary school, I think one year above me, but may well have been two. I'm pretty certain Woody was also in the same scout troop...
I can't remember ever seeing them at an orienteering event though.

Well, they supported Pulp on their 2002 tour of Forestry Commission woods (no, really...) which included Roseisle....
Wikipedia says "The band have built up an eccentric image in interviews and press releases; some of which is based on fact, other times merely whimsical building of outward personas. This has included giving journalists grid references at which to meet them, and expressing obsessions with Field Marshal Montgomery and bird watching."
Off-topic a bit, does orienteering /orienteers have the same stereotype outside Britain? Are there whimsical Norwegian black metal bands who prefer orienteering to killing each other and burning down medieval churches?

one of the strangest gigs i've ever been to, given how frequently i've been orienteering at roseisle! (I didn't like BSP then, but they've grown on me having seen them again recently).
They're playing a gig at yet another strange venue tonight I think, the Czech Embassy!

Re: Have you seen these men?!
we have two elite boxers who joined the orienteering club at uni this year cos to compete in their busa they need to join the athletic union and the orienteering club was the cheapest way for that. anyway, when asked by the s+c coach if they knew what orienteering was, they said birdwatching. ive not heard the end of that one in my gym sessions...
