You probably won't believe this, in which case ask Tony, but last night I decided to give up on a book. Seriously, the last book I gave up on was 'Moby Dick' sometime BC (before children) when I had ordered one of those partwork, book + magazine things of Classics, with a resolve to read each one before the next one arrived. Just couldn't do it with 'Moby Dick' - the books were piling up on the bedside cabinet....so I gave it up with some relief.
To return to last night. I had been reading one of Becky's 'left-behinds', 'The Wind-up Bird Chronicle' by Haruki Murakami (should have known with Chronicle in the title!). Thoroughly depressed and completely confused by the increasingly surreal nature of the storyline and, only on page 259 out of 607, I decided against my nature to give it up - at the point where the central tortured character climbed down a rope ladder into a well, presumably to 'find himself'!?
Digging into my book bag I pulled out at random Maggie O'Farrell's 'the distance between us' only to read on the first page; "How had he managed to fall asleep? He'd been reading, head propped up on his hands, and the last thing he remembered was the man in his book descending a rope ladder into a disused well...." No seriously, ask Tony!

Oh come on Becks, even a character in another book fell asleep reading it! I'd be interested to hear how you get on candyman - I can recommend a good book by Maggie O'Farrell - finished it - and it visits interesting parts such as the bridge over the River Feshie near Kincraig..sold

It's wonderful! I stand by my original assessment! It's cinematic and surreal and beautiful...one of my favourites!

Re: Something spooky..
definitely spooky though,
like the time I was having a shower thinking. I wonder how Elke is getting on crossing Africa, she's been away for months, wonder if she'll be back any time soon.
having dried and dressed the phone rang - Elke "hey Undy" (Kiwis speak funny) "back in town, how about a beer then ?" vanishing coincidence maybe
but what about
the striking dream (meaning I woke up thinking "whooah too real - too vivid" - in which my sister Sue asked me whether Kate was going to make it across the water to visit her too, I replied no Kate was working shifts so couldn't.
This was before Sue lived on the Isle of Lewis, before I had met Kate and before she was a nurse !

Re: Something spooky..
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is great. So is Moby Dick. Could it be that you just don't like long books?
Seriously though, I read Wind-Up Bird earlier this year and found it totally engrossing - one of the most readable 'big books' I've ever come across. If you want unreadable twaddle, try Ratner's Star by Don Delillo.
Cheers,
Patrick

No, it's not a long books thing because I've done 'War and Peace', Tolkien etc etc. Maybe I'll give Wind-up Bird another chance when Ofsted have been.....

I gave up on Murikami too Wendles, but a lot earlier than you. In fact, I've given up several times! Totally unengaging.

Looks like it's an age thing I can't enter into this as I don't really read. I'm just trying to get through Simon Schamer's history of GB. Taking ages I want to read the modern stuff but am making myself read it all. Can't do this high brow literature stuff.
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.
