Last Chance Kids, C4 TV - orienteering
At 9pm on Thurs 25 Oct 07, Channel Four screened the last of 3 programmes about children at Monteagle Primary School in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. For a year, children and teachers used the synthethic phonics system to improve reading levels - which certainly seemed to work. However, in the summer half term, the Year 6 pupils went to Trewern Outdoor Centre in Wales, where they did many activities. There was some confusion among pupils about the location of Wales - despite the clue of being on a coach! One was described as "orienteering" - it included maps of the buildings and grounds (black and white apparently). Instead of code letters or pin punchers, at each "control" there was a question eg "what colour is this shed?" Seems ironic that orienteering has international symbols which do not require reading. However, I still reckon it would be difficult to get to any start location without being able to read, participate in online discussion forums etc. So, I reckon we should let this error pass.
