Biggest Geek on Nopesport
In response to DIDSCO's moaning, let's find out who people think really is the biggest geek/anorak.
Nottingham University: September 2000 - September 2009. Staying in higher education for a decade is harder than you think.

To ensure a fair poll I hope you are going to use weightings of 1.14 for M21E and 0.55 for ....oh never mind
But when the results do come out, ensure all future posts from those listed are seeded to avoid following and grouping of geeks

I am so proud to be in this poll when the likes of EddieH and Greame and all of that ilk didn't even make the list
I always thought of myself as more of the shock/horror sensationalist/popular culuralist type of poster rather than a geek (which implies some actual knowledge rather than a hint of a feeling).
And look - people are actually voting for me Hoorah - pass the Open University Prospectus.

And like Mrs H I am over the moon to be even considered worth including in such esteemed company. I don't have an anorak but I do have a beard, I'm not sure if both or either are compulsory. I just hope whoever is controling this poll has a copy of the latest rules and guidelines handy, not to mention that he/she interprets them in a way I see fit

People competing for geekyness...what has the world come to?
I want to walk up the side of the mountain, I want to walk down the other side of the mountain. I want to swim in the river, lie in the sun. I want to try being nice to everyone.

Having read all this stuff about orienteering geeks, I conclude that DIDSCO was half right and half wrong. Right to think that all those technical threads make us look like geeks, but wrong to assume this would put people off taking up the sport. Almost all the non-orienteers I know are geeky about something, their cars, their fish pond, their diy equipment, their mobile phone, their work. So why not make geekyness a selling point? The alternative to not finding something complex and trivial like orienteering to immerse yourself in, is to wake up to the tedium of modern life and that only leads to one thing - grumpy old man/woman ness - and general ranting about tailgaiting, dog fouling etc.
I only have a problem with the word "geek". To me this word implies someone you would not choose to sit next to on a bus - yet alone join a sport full of them. But I have no problem sitting next to orienteers on a bus*. What we need is a new term to replace "orienteering geek" which is cooler and trendier. "Map freak", "d1bber head" something like that. Any suggestions?
