Aye
but who are the people that go around effecting "regime change" ?
won't that tend to mean American troops Hoo-yah-ing through the streets of down town Edinburgh, shooting the place to pieces because they "cannae hunnerstoan whit yis er bletherin oan aboot" and they are shi'ite scared of people they don't understand and explosives seem like the only answer.
Anyway it won't happen because our oil is running out

G, Who sent the soldiers to Iraq?
PeterG, Soldiers are trained to fight wars, what they are doing is policing. So an crowd were throwing stones at them. Does that mean you catch the slowest ones and beat them shitless?
I think the sort of people who throw stones at soldiers are the sort of people who live in a country which has been invaded by the US and UK because they don't like the leader but they do like oil...
How would you like it if the Chinese invaded the UK because they didn't like our governemt?
Personally I'd make up some home made bomb at take out a few of the bastards in one go.... but I'm not an Iraqi so I don't have the chance.

I'm sick of hearing that we were wrong to get rid of saddam hussein. Even if you don't care about the suppression of the majority of his own people (at least 60%- shi'ites and kurds) through torture and execution you have to look at his behaviour in the first gulf war when he kidnapped 4500 british nationals off planes and in Iraq and illegally invaded a neighbouring country. One of my neighbours was left without word from his father for at least 6 months. Granted we should have finished the job at the start of the 90s and we should have been able to come up with a better reason for stopping him when we did.
I think it was right for people to protest at the time to show their opposition to war and in fact I encouraged one of my friends to go along even though I disagreed. The fact is that our democratically elected government voted on the invasion of iraq and at the 2005 election they got back in. I think the topic of invading iraq is over since if Iraq had been a big enough issue for the British people then we could have voted labour out and we didn't (I voted for a party that was against the war). We should concentrate instead on the massive rebuilding job.
We have had at least 10000 soldiers in iraq, what these videos show us are maybe 10 soldiers behaving irresponsibly. I am extremely proud of the troops in iraq because
a) I would probably not have the patience they have on a day to day basis trying to keep control of a population that has been suppressed for 20 years.
b) They are trying to rebuild one of the poorest areas of iraq that saddam left without proper water sanitation, local services. Indeed despite the well highlighted insurgency, the british troops have managed to build up a good working relationship with most of the local authorities and people who realise that we are there to protect their interests. And it is to our credit that it has only taken a couple of days to investigate the soldiers who used extreme force against the iraqis in the video after the video was found. And let's be honest the actions of these soldiers are not those trying to humiliate a population and desecrate a religion but the actions of soldiers who have been under siege for days by rioters and have let their anger spill over.

Would you rather they did nothing? When is it ever a good idea to throw rocks at people with guns? What sort of message does it send out if our soldiers stand around and do nothing when they are assaulted?

Peter....the video shows soldiers with armour on and guns, beating the jobby out of kids who threw rocks at them, that is not right. Obviously you don;t want them to do nothing, but there is no need for that. If they are policing, then arrest them or whatever. However, you cant really make a desicion on the whole issue of the war on Iraq, just because a few soldiers were being arseholes and beating people up.
