Well the man was an absolute genius with a ball at his feet, even Pele called him the best footballer in the world, but you can't ignore the fact that he did throw his life down the toilet.
Still the media frenzy is a bit much, great man, but let him rest in peace now.

At one point in the week the media were torn between waiting for the inevitable with George and scouring the cities looking for evidence of hooliganism following the changes to the drinking laws - on a Wednesday/Thursday night!?!? Give us some real news please...

as did the rally driver richard burns.
i remember reading somewhere not too long ago about newspaper offices having a file of ready to run stories for people dying in relative order of importance & likelihood of death in the near future, i seem to remember the queen mum & george best being high up the pecking order, obviously for different reasons. If anyone knows what i'm on about i'd welcome a point in the right direct of the article as it's annoying me as to what & where it was.

Radio 4 almost surpassed itself yesterday reporting on the weather on Bodmin Moor.
The reporter clearly felt he was meant for greater things - delusions of Kate Adie I feel.
He did a fantastic job though, describing a few abondoned cars as if he were the first witness to some apalling act of war. His tone and language would have been best suited to a report on "The Road to Basra" rather than a few comuters who had to spend the night in a village hall.

Back to the death of Richard Burns, I think that is much sadder, because his illness was not his own fault. H
e was a fantastic sportsman and the first Englishman to win the world rally championship, and a personal favourite of mine when I was into rallying. He fought bravely against his illness, and rallying lost one of its true stars. Great man

Agree 100% Bedders. Best's tragedy didn't occur this weekend - it happened decade ago
i wonder if there is any correlation between sporting genius and the self-destructive gene. thinking about Higgins thinking about Gazza - and who would bet against ronnis and Wayne going down that same blind alley.

I don't want to get involved in a debate over the death of a sportsman but I think it's generally regognised the George Best suffered from a diesese (alcoholism) and as such it wasn't actually 'his fault' but a quirk of nature.
It's sad that any sports people die & we are fortunate in orienteering that they are few in numbers. Lets remember sports people for thier contribution to the world of sport & not their fraility as a human.
