Most university sports clubs will have their own websites, and a directory somewhere on the university's site. eg http://users.ox.ac.uk/~scug/clubs/all.shtml
http://www.cam.ac.uk/societies/
http://www.union.ic.ac.uk/money/FinanceFiles/list.shtml
http://www.shef.ac.uk/usport/clubs.html
http://www.eusu.ed.ac.uk/clubs.html
The sports clubs' pages may or not be useful in themselves, but should have lists of committee members who you could contact for more information.
And I know it's heretical, but there's no reason to rule out a university's orienteering club just because it's smaller than ShUOC or EUOC. The more important factor is whether or not there's an orienteering club at all! Then just keep looking around universities, talking to students, and try to get a feel for the atmosphere.

i know that leeds are the best at cycling, we've won all 3 busa events so far. xc is between st mary's, birmingham, leeds and loughborough (going on this year's results, though loughborough women are much better than their men at present). as for the rest, like peter g said, just look it up on the busa website.

edinburgh is fun in running, cycling, swimming, and orienteering!
There always people about in running and orienteering club training almost everynight of the week and i know that my mate she swims a lot like 4 hours a day and said the club is good. Not sure about the cycling club but i think there is a good edinburgh cycling team which some of the injured runners have been cycling with.
... Edinburgh is the best
there is also a good pond on arthurs seat (AS is 10metres from the student halls) so you can swim in it, cycle round arthurs seat once then run round it

From vague memory Bath uni has a 50m pool. Think members of the national swimming squad train there and probably some triathletes. Sheffield' s Ponds Forge has hosted national swimming champs. (channel 4s 'The games' had diving from there if you saw that) Am sure there's probably a pool in Edinburgh too.

Maybe, but with an active orienteering club, you're not going to have problems getting to events....and the rest of the time all you need to do is train!
