orienteering can get you places, and in my case it got me out of jobby creek. i arrived into hong kong a few days ago and discovered to my horror that i had left my guidebook photocopies in melbourne. thanks to map memory i have in the past 2 days managed to navigate through china's 3rd biggest city to a youth hostel... took a while but alls well.
heres bendovers bird flu report - i havent got it yet, but not for lack of trying. the BBC website told me to avoid chicken markets and farms. goddam it i tried hard, but like the hopeless travelling buffon that i am i found myself walking through a chicken market in Guangzhou within 24 hrs of being in mainland china. I am happy to report that I am currently not dead, and dont have any feathers either. not even a sneeze as yet.
I am currently staying in a fantastic little country town called yangshuo. its smack bang in the middle of the kind of stereotypical chinese landscapes that you see in tourist guides - huge towering limestone pillar mountains, and a lazy river that winds through the paddy fields on the plateau. pretty cool after the riot that was Guangzhou, 13 million people all trying to be the first into the metro station. all good.
anyway i'll regale you all with more stories later on, once I have got a few more tropical diseases. neglecting to take my malaria medicine should help me on that one.

i managed to avoid chicken markets today, so went one better and cycled straight through a bloody chicken farm... ffs
hunter and I cycled through the mountain scenery of the yangshuo district... we climbed moon peak and then I went up in a hot air balloon. the weather today has been perfectly still and freezing cold with clear blue skies. We cycled up the Yulong River, and stopped at a hotel called the mountain retreat... I went for a crap, and there on the wall, in a frame, was an orienteering map! it was from 2002, full colour by Geoff Peck (Hong Kong Orienteer). I couldn't believe it! It was of the surrounding farmland and mountains. turns out that they had a North Face adventure race here in 2002, orienteering was one of the sections.
didnt have time to go orienteering so ate some fried rice instead and carried on cycling.
Hunter and I have decided to go on a mission north to the Himalayas. the altitude could go up to 4000m. we'll see how far we can get before it gets too darn cold. should be there in 2 weeks depending on the conditions.
peace out,
