To continue the life and times of Asian McCarthy
Yesterday and today were holiday days due to the Hajj Eid festival.
So yesterday the Italian in our office Barbarra invited myself and other Brian to lunch at a guy she knows house. So I thought, yeah banter, I'll go for some lunch! Got in the armoured car, no idea where I was going or anything, just Brian, Barbara, some other Italian and I.
So we travel down the river a bit through an area of Basra I'd never been to before.
I tell you, this area is sweet as, so nice, got rivers running through it, palm tree forest for as far as you can see and agriculutre under the palms.
We get to this wee dirt track turning and go up this track about 2Km until the road ends. We get out and are greated by this local. He walks us through his date palm plantation to this well nice grassed area under the palm trees next to a small river. This guy was a contractor who had worked for Barbara when she was working for an NGO in town here before the CPA began. He got out all this whole patio furniture and huge spread of food. They were just lighting a fire and filleting some huge fish. So while that was going on they came out with stacks of coke to drink, they started downing it and I didn't have a clue what they were up to. The they line the empty cans up along the river bank and the old boy comes back from the house with an AK47 and starts shooting the cans. He then passes the gun around and everyone has a go. Funniest thing I've ever seen, standing in the middle of Iraq, in the middle of the most beautiful area I've seen in Iraq, a right little oasis and were shooting up cans with an AK, random Banter.
We then sit down with a huge feast with some of the most amazing fish I've ever had, well nice. The land around this guys land is quality. I could totally buy a small farm there and just live the life of nothing, pottering about farming the dates and stuff, nice.
