Another route choice
How would people tackle this leg (3 -> 4)? It's from the Denny Lodge event at the beginning of December, about 450m in length, and you wouldn't have seen the scattered trees on the map as they are very feint.

There were scattered trees shown on the map? Seems that I missed that when running!
Visibility was good enough that by running direct I found the control easily enough, The rough open, on the edge of the scanned map, was easy enough to spot, to give a clue as to when one was approaching the area where the control was.

I also didn't see the scattered trees marked on the map whilst running, hence the comment. I attempted to go straight and drifted off right and overshot, had to loop back round into the control. Only lost about a minute but looking at the splits many lost a lot more time than that.

i didn't run there, but i have done plenty of new forest stuff. straight is good but maybe not percentage wise. i think a slight aim off, or banana route to either side is better as you can see either open areas left and or ditch to the right to give you good distance and direction aids.
saying that i think in a race i would just go fairly straight. you should always be confident doing this that you will hit it, though being aware of what you may see if you stray from straight is a good idea.

banana routes are assking for trouble. run striaght, picking up the two clearings to check you are on line. if your distance judgement says youe gone far enough and you can't see anything go another 10m and if you still see nothing go out to the fence and relocate on the edge of the orange.

Looking at it again, perhaps a fairly safe and quick route would be to go for the first ditch on the left of the map and use the end of that as an attack point. I tried to go straight, but the clearings weren't particularly obvious and several obstructions along the straight line helped push me off a good 30 metres to the right of the control.

Miss the New Forest.. Had my best ever run at Emery Down when I was an M17(the odd number dates me)
Here is the map last time I was at Denny.. .The forest was hardly surveyed as the FC would not let it be used when the map was made.
