on the training day for the JWOC97 in Belgium, Ian Lockington, representing ireland, ran off the map and got a bit lost. he came out onto a road and hitched down a public bus. which took him 30km down the road, and over the border into holland. what a legend. i'm not exactly sure how he got back
anyone got any others?

returning from some training in the wood right next to Uppsalla hut this summer. ( which is by a horse stables) i was trundelling through the wood when i hear this crashing. branches breaking and general ruckas. So i look up... about 30 metres away are these two horses running towards me full pelt.
I had to kane it like Dickalot away from Mrs Strain over this knoll and found a boulder to clamber onto the top of ( thankfully it was sweden with large boulders ) So here i was jobby scared with horses walking around this boulder .. they must have thought i was food or something. Anyways they stayed around for 2 mins or so then wandered off. I must have been about 300m from the road in thick woodland ... so when they were out of sight i began picking my way through the forest trying to not get noticed again. Finally thought sod this and high tailed it through dark green as fast as id ever run before to the road.
Dont think i've ever been that scared orienteering before.

its not a mistake but its kinda like drew's tale
norway 96ish, near kristiansand or however you spell it (the southern one) running through some amazin forest, orienteering well, see control on side of big knoll, happy, not paying attention to control much as trying to finalise next route choice (oh yes), punch control, turn round, realise i have just run pst a bloody great moose which is standing right behind me like 5 metres away. soiled myself. stood still and sobbed a wee bit. almost collapsed with relief as it decides to turn round and saunter away. cue much sprinting in wrong direction to get as far away as possible, resulting in jobbie split time. poo
good couple of weeks though, those were the days.

yeah, i too ran into an elk when out training in norway on the 2000 tour i think it was, in the area around the hut. we both [nope]ed it and bolted in opposite directions and i didn't have a clue where i went so took a hell of a long time to find the next control...

Is it possible for your compass to be around 13 degrees out at each control? Or was my brain just thirteen degrees out? Was on a course in Finland at dusk and kept just missing controls uon short legs until I had a huge 1.5km leg. I ended up in a field, next to a farm, and very scared of bears. I finally relocated and was almost a km away from the control with a huge hill between me and it. A not very happy Becky got back to the bus, almost making Streaker miss his tea. Which is never a good thing. And then when i drew my route on I went off in the same slightly wrong direction at every control. Bad brain or bad compass? Hmm...
Will? We've got proper fire now!

The bus driver took him back to his house and fed him then took him to the local police station who had already heard of his disappearing act! Legendary story that one, hard to beat!

yaroo panthers and the like
yeah my brother has some kind of epic story about wild brumbies circling him in the middle of the bush, but I don't believe that one.
One time when I was about 12 and at a squad training, I was sent out to do some route choice exercises FAR FAR AWAY from the rest of my group, and I was a bit niggly because we had heard a large growl earlier that day on the course, and we were on a map that there had been many panther sitings on before. So I was out there singing a happy tune in my head when I heard something break in the bushes behind me, and I turned around and couldn't see anything so I kept on going at double speed (just to be safe), and there was another noise, so I started sprinting back towards the rest of the group, in my blind fit of panic, I noticed bits of hair or wool attached to all the bindi plants around, but I didn't notice a this log, and I fell flat on my face,
as I got up I realised I'd fallen inches away from a fresh steaming sheep carcus which looked like it had been torn open, with intestines spilling and all. I high tailed it out of there, only to be told off for abandoning the training.
uh well.
