Can some techie out there write a text speak filter so I can have any clue whatsoever what Jene's on about? I'd write one but I'm too busy working/surfing Nope.

How about a filter to expand the dubious "txt" abbreviations into proper words, then two thumbed typists would not have to change and we might be able to read what they wrote? Worth a few hours of hacking but it will have to wait till August before I can think about it.
Jene has done 7 txtspks in the last two posts!

So that's no use of caps, and "and" has an "a" and a "d" either side of the "n". Although that was a relatively readable one I have to admit.

Oh please... let's not go down the apostrophe and ellipsis cul-de-sac (or cul-des-sacs, or culs-de-sac?). Before you know it we will be looking into the finer points of the hyphen versus the dash and arguing the appropriate use of the Oxford comma.

You're the second person to recommend that to me today! And this is the week after our tutor gave us each a grammar tutorial when we thought we were writing a critical analysis of a research paper. I'm getting worried!
Why don't they teach us grammar anymore?

Will? We've got proper fire now!

Really should get round to reading more that the first chapter. However I did not think much of it based on that much. Also has a critical (though American centric - which affects some of the points) review of said book, which makes a few good points about it.

True, its rather self-congratulatory in places, and you wouldn't want to read more than a chapter per sitting, but it's compulsory reading and very affirming in a geeky sort of way if you are an editor or proof-reader.

Her writing style irritated me but it is definitely a book worth the effort - a bit at a time. I learnt a lot (most of which I have now forgotten!) and when she warms up she does take you into some hot debates and shows how punctuation is evolving and maybe some new usage makes sense and will eventually win out. (I totally support her views on modern use of the dash - as you can see from many of my posts, though it can be hard to produce proper em dashes in html!)
