A bumper year for contenders but will simply winning an Olympic gold be enough? Even multiple gold winners like Mo Farah and Sir Chris Hoy might not have done enough to match the acheivements of Andy Murray and Bradley Wiggins, both winning Olympic gold and acheiving landmark non-Olympic victories.
Personally I'd like to see Andy Murray win. I'm impressed with Wiggo's credentials but wonder if the recent negative publicity over Lance Armstrong might result in a bit of apathy over voting for the Tour de France Winner.

We all know it's a load of [entertaining] bollocks but I hope the lads mags editors vote Katherine Grainger onto the short list.

Re: SPOTY 2012
Wiggo's good value - but the integrity of his sport seems to be under increasing pressure, and I think that lessens the chance of him winning even though he's clean.
Jess Ennis is a fantastic athlete and if she won it probably would be an approrpriate "personality" - but Murray and Wiggo's acheivements both in and out of the Olympics stand out for me.
David Weir's achievements in his field are pretty outstanding but I am yet to be personally convinced about the strength of the fields in paralympic events. If Mo Farah won Olympic 100m as well as the 10k I'd be thinking the 100m wasnt that good a field...

Ennis.
She's the one who had all the pre-olympic media pressure on her for the last four years.
She's the one without a back up event.
She's the one with seven chances to stuff up.
She's the one that broke the British Record
She's the one that broke the other British record
She won.
she's the one.

Ah but, I have Gross, and you know almost none of them earn as much as Murray or go out with Kim Sears and yet they still manage to go round not looking like life has dealt them a bad hand
Obviously they are all worthy candidates but I like Wiggo, he is fun, and at least Jess and Mo look happy and don't complain.
I may have to launch an ABM campaign

Re: SPOTY 2012
Wiggo or Murray because the howevermanyathalon isn't a real sport just a complicated triathlon for people with too much time on their hands.
Wish they'd just call it sporting achievement of the year though, I don't care how "bubbly" they are, for this award it should be the winning that counts.

Um, she had the 100 hurdles, her time in the heptathlon would have put her 4th just .06 off a medal in the 100h final.
I really don't care between Mo, Ennis, Murray or Wiggins. They've all done very well and shown great personality (this year Murray especially has shown more than anyone that he DOES have personality)

Re: SPOTY 2012
Well he cried a bit after Wimbledon which was encouraging but hardly anything to persuade me he wasn't a miserable git.
but we agree on the rest of the field. I vote for Wiggo.
Team of the year? Can anyone beat the nothing short of miraculous Ryder Cup team?

I agree on Wiggo.
"Team GB" at the Olympics? Not really a "team" though, more of a "brand", so I'd agree that the Ryder Cup team is a likely winner.

Re: SPOTY 2012
The rules explicitly exclude Team GB and ParalympicsGB. I expect it will be between the Ryder Cup team and British Cycling, although I guess Team Sky, Wales rugby and even Chelsea (but let's hope not) would be in with a shout.

Re: SPOTY 2012
They say team of the year excludes "team GB", sensible as there are hundreds of them and it becomes meaningless, but individuals who competed as part of the GB team will surely still be eligible, and small teams within "team GB" eg the gold medal winning C2 white water guys (one of whose gold medal I got to hold yesterday) will still be eligible.
