Not many personal stories on here but I thought I'd chuck one in - I participated in my first event in 14 years on Sunday. I was a keen competitor in my teens and twenties between 1979 and 1998 but things got in the way causing me to stop. Bit rusty and very unfit but managed to beat some old women and childern on a green course - should probably have done blue really but not coming last made me feel better. Not sure one event signifies a comeback but it's a start.
About the only noticable difference is that the punching/splits/results has gone all fancy, other than that things hadn't appeared to have changed much at all.
Looking at doing more event raises a couple of immediate questions:
What's happened to badge events? It's all gone colour coded.
Have 1:15,000 maps disappeared? Looking at future event details it's all 1:10,000 and a forthcoming event at Leith Hill even has a 1:7,500 map!
Is there anything else that I should know?
Tim

Tim, welcome back.
Maps: The default scale for M/W21-M/W40 remains 1:15 000; however for the over 45s it is 1:10 000 on account of aging eyes (not sure whether you have joined the M45+ gang yet). Moreover, on some technical areas with lots of detail that would be too cluttered to read easily on the move there can be variations from the default position such as 1:10 000 maps for all ages or putting 21-40 on 1:10 000 and 45+ on 1:7500.
Leith Hill is the best technical area in the SE hence the 1:7500 map, don't miss the opportunity to run there.
Badge events - where to start? Badge events where part of a 5 level system, which was changed in 2009 to 3 levels (Championships, Regional Events and local events) with only Championships retaining age classes and the rest going colour coded. A year later the system was changed again into 4 levels, which is where we are now - RJ can explain the 4 level system because I still have not got my head around the difference between level B and level C but I certainly don't think we should change again because it creates work and confusion.
Therefore, the majority of the events you go to are still going to be colour-coded albeit there can be a correlation between colours and age groups for competitions like some league events or at White Rose (e.g. M45S and W45L Short Blue, M21 Black.....).
So outside the major events it will be colour coded courses you are faced with.
Other than that the basic principles are the same: run as fast as you can whilst being in control, spike all the controls and minimise errors - no change from the 80s and 90s.
once again welcome back

One other change you'll probably appreciate is routegadget - an extension of the chat in the car park comparing routes and enabling you to see what mistakes others made (and reasonably measure the effect) and compare them with the mistakes you made.
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Incidentally well done on coming back on a green course. I tried and failed a couple of times in my twenties to come back on a brown course and was dreadful! Eventaully settled on blue and got on at least repectably and now been back and loving it for 15 years or so.
Orienteering - its no walk in the park

You got the right Tim. It's really good to hear from you.
The years may have passed but somethings don't change - I'm still fat and not fit enough.
I'll drop you a mail over the weekend.
