Am I alone in being very unamused by the tired old joke in the latest issue of FOCUS, the BOF official magazine about "Middle aged men in lycra"?
This humour brings the sport down to the level of late night Channel 4 comedians where such things are treated with the inevitable humour. If it were not for middle aged men in lycra, I doubt if the sport of orienteering would be as successful as it is now, and I would be grateful if BOF would not endorse such purile comments by printing them in their own magazine!! Better to wear lycra than shorts where it would be so easy to pick up ticks, scratches and diseases in the forest!!

First of all this demonstrates that people DO read Focus. Excellent.
But for the benefit of the 9998 other orienteers, what was the joke?

why not wear orienteering trousers shingo? or do you need the continual support of some far too tight garish garments?

Re: JOKES ABOUT MEN IN LYCRA
My current torn and tatty O suit has served me well over the past 22 years and will hopefully be around for some years yet, and I don't use lycra for orienteering, only running and cycling. The Focus article was on page 24 of the current Autumn issue, 4th line.

Reading the article it looks like this term is one used in the cycling community (and the comment is in an article about Mountain Bike Orienteering).
Therefore I don't know what your point is. Are you complaining about the use of this term in cycling?
Perhaps you would like to email the author of the article to tell him your point. His name is Mark Stodgell and his email address is in the article.

I like middle aged men in lycra!
You are nowhere near middle aged Andy, I've only started to think of myself as middle aged since turning 45, although my lovely little sister has taken to introducing me as "my big sister who's nearly 50". Luckily she lives in Surrey so doesn't introduce me to many people and at the work "party night" last night I danced to some techno and tried kidding myself I was still in my 20s.
