1) I am doing Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Psychology for A-level
2) I'm going to quit the argument about which headlamp is brighter/better because I feel it's down to individual choice.
3) I said 2 hours not 4 hours- 4 hours really *really* would be [nope]ed up...

I own both the tikka and a 20w headtorch
Your comparing the lights you find on a bike with the ones on a car, simply no comparison. They are both great for what they are designed for, the tikka for mountain marathons etc where weight is an issue and it is a great improvment on a maglite type torch. The 20w headtorch was make for night orienteering, in the control circle, the greater range and brightness make finding the control fast and easy, almost like day OL, a tikka just can't do this, i've tried. the weight, not an issue however they do costs 5 times as much, but a lot of that is the battery, so make your own for a fraction of the cost, which can weigh much less, last twice as long and shine even brighter
The tikka is much better value, but you won't find anyone winning any big races with it.
right i'm off to charge my 20w torch so that I can use it by next week.

thats the badger, i knew they had advertised in compass sport once, but i couldnt remeber their name. i would obviously never consider buying one of those cross bread catastrophes, but im sure they work well.
just had a wee look at the website. it seems to me that the lights are pretty good, powerfull with a nice headset, i cant couvh for its comfort. but the battery carriers look completely pants, so i think it with a bit of custom tinkering you can make your own one to suit your own body. maybe a somthing like schnitzles sports bra would work

best do that soon before the nopesport cartel gets blinded by the bright lights of corporate sponsorship....

alright kids,
so as you know from the start what i am going to be saying: I have the identical kit to mharky, it is top notch, and there is really no comparison on brightness w a petzl tikka or any other LED-based system i've seen (ie silva 100 or something like that i think it's called).
the question of whether you need one or two headlamps depends on what you want to do. of course, when i play tennis i don't use a badminton racket, even tho' it's lighter. I don't go orienteering in my DS trainers. similarly... well i don't hav' to spell it out.
also, I have only seen the tikka used once in orienteering, and that was on 1st leg of 10mila this year. ie in the daytime.
also, the light from the tikka (also pukka or whatever the other identical one's called) also does decay with use, at least according to the spec on the box i read when i was in england last week. apparently tho', some fancy circuitry is knocking around to get round this in some LED-based kit. this is in stark contrast to my own Silva kit, which gives full brightness till it's fairly empty (ie about 1 minute of any low awful useless light remaining) and then cut out, at which time it's time to panic and run out of the woods as fast as possible.
probably it then
oh, except to say i thought it was inspired of SCOA to spurn their previously stated view that electronic punching was a passing fad and to buy emit.

Wattok: I was waiting till I hit the big 100 and then I went out.
David: Cheers m8, sums it up fairly well, glad we've cleaned that one up. Coming 2 the short races and/or regional? wouldn't mind bringing your 20w with you so i can see what it's like?
IC: r u a sort of economical guy/girl?
Mharky: I will be happy to start another fascinating and entertaining debate on e-cards...

I prefer to spend my money on more beneficial things, ie trips to sweden etc.
I was just suggesting the battery thing as I know someone who has modified theirs with good results
afraid I won't be at the short races as will be down in SE for the weekend, but will be at the local night races in feb, can probably loan you one for the race unless my sister needs it

peter b > yes, that's right. as are you also by the sound of it from your earlier mouthings-off re why buy two if you could get away w only buying one. don't worry tho', it's perfectly possible to orienteer at night w, for example, a petzl zoom. (incidentally, does anyone know how the classic halogenated species compares to the LED things?) last time i did a night event in the UK i used my petzl zoom, as did the majority of other punters. it was, of course, fine, until it broke. just not as good as what i have now.
don't be put off giving it a go tho'. as a further point to reassure you, before i bought any orienteering shoes i actually used to orienteer in trainers, so that should be all right then.
I am interested in knowing the answer to that question back there if anyone would care to enlighten me.
