Heavier Kindles
I see that graeme's been getting involved in some serious discussion in the Guardian. A researcher at Berkeley has found that a Kindle can get heavier when loaded with books:a whole one attogram heavier when half loaded (one attogram = a billionth of a billionth of a gram). Says graeme: "If Professor Kubiatowicz is really struggling with the extra weight, he's welcome to come to Edinburgh where it's cooler, and the lack of thermal energy in his Kindle will more than compensate." I did check the date!

Re: Heavier Kindles
How long before we use devices like kindles instead of maps? Change the scale to suit eyesight, ground detail and light conditions while actually in the course; potentially change colours for the colour blind. Even illuminate for night events.
Followed by head up display on your glasses as you run.

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

I thought Kindles were banned from Scotland because Alex Salmond can't read?

You are correct
Graeme really wants him to come to Edinburgh so that we can club the guy to death for using witchcraft

I gave him the line about the "negligible" weight being that of a virus too, but only got credit for the comedy invite. Journalists eh?
And it only applies to flash drives, not conventional memory. Anyone want to guess why?

Okay I know I'm going to regret this but WTH!

Because conventional memory is only 640KB?
I would say I'll get me coat, but in the context it would probably be more appropriate for me to TSR.
Plumbing whole new depths of anti-banter.

My guess: because conventional memory is already full of 'data' and is only overwritten/rearranged when new 'data' is added whereas flash drives are blank to start with

I thought it was because conventional memory is made from Steel and flash drives are a modern new fangled composite thing.

Re: Heavier Kindles
So DavidJ is closest. Flash drive stores binary memory with a confined/unconfined electron charge - confined ones are heavier. Conventional uses up/down magnets which have the same mass. Flash starts out unconfined (i.e. blank).
Yes, this is what we physicists call banter. I'll get my (white) coat.
