And another thing..... something that i'll never finish but I also feel I've hardly started, and that is to find the time to read lots of good books. I tend to snatch 10-15 mins here and there, so it takes me 2 weeks to read an average book and I probably only get through 10 a year, and with hundreds still to read...... I need to retire.
I feel a new thread coming on about what books people recommend

Only start that thread if you're happy to have twenty people all recommending "Murder at the 14th Control".

I wouldn't mind watching all those DVDs I have bought but the wife always says no to watching when we get a couple of hours.
The pile is forever growing. needless to say, most either have sub titles or are scifyish. and then there is that series of Fringe and .....
But at least I am uptodate with all the romcoms. when the daughter comes home for christmas it wil be even worse

I'm trying to read the "1001 books to read before you die."
http://www.goodreads.com/group/bookshelf/970.1001_Books_You_Must_Read_Before_You_Die
Unfortunately there's now well more than 1001, because the sod keeps updating his book. Still, I've read some absolutely crackers:
http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/2341546
There are also some complete stinkers on there - Islands by Dan Sleigh and Cloudsplitter by Russell Banks comes to mind. It's a huge project but thus far I've uncovered some gems I'd never have found, and hope to complete it!
Aside from that, I want to go to Iceland and find a less stressful job that I actually enjoy.

Re: B4UDIE
Visit Pompeii - (and maybe Rome) should get there 2011 all being well.
See the Northern Lights.
Visit Norway + Iceland.
Cycle LEJOG (Lands End- John Groats).
Get Christmas Sorted by mid November and enjoy a relaxed December.
Go cross country skiing in Norway (or somewhere similar)
Travel around New Zealand.
Cycle in Denmark (again) + maybe the North Sea Cycle Route.
Visit Dresden + Auschwitz.
Read some "good books"
Kayak areas around the West Coast of Scotland ( I need to learn to Kayak 1st!)
A lot of the above I've wanted to do since being at school and I'm just starting to realise they are achievable but some will take some effort from myself!
Getting more expensive and I may not manage (NZ excepting as a long long held dream but probaly too expensive)
Visit Alaska + Canada.
Raft /kayak (if i can?) the Grand Canyon.
Just realised these are mostly fairly active "to dos" I'd better plan ahead or stay fit _ healthy.
Pompeii + learn to kayak in 2011. LEJOG sometime in the next 10 years.

Ok so I didn't read the instructions properly!
Little things...
Pompeii and LEJOG are still fairly small and 35 years ago with no cheap flights etc Pompeii seemed an awfully long wayaway.
Small(er) :-
See the Giant's Causeway - JK add on.
Drive a rally car/on a racetrack.
Get the wedding photos out of the cheapo view+ choose albumn into a proper one -25 or more year later.
Complete my easy care (a shrub or two to flower in every season) and minimal weeding garden.

I'd like to learn to swim (more than a width...), ski, & juggle
All pretty basic, but I have been to Iceland, a very strange place where I didn't go in any hot springs (see #1 above), drive on glaciers or meet Bjork, but did go running in Icelandic forests (bigger than you think), eat hakarl (more disgusting than you can possibly imagine) and was bought a drink by the PM (not that we knew who he was - we thought he was a local businessman/gangster, which turned out to be not a million miles from the truth...)

Re: B4UDIE
B4DIE is flawed. A list of things people would like to do.. but probably won't.
If you really want to do something don't add it to a list, do it right now! Today!
Or at least start laying the groundwork.
I meet people all the time who say things like "I would love to go and live in a mud hut in Africa", they don't, they like the idea of it but they will never actually do it because they have a mortgage or would rather buy a new pair of dangly earrings.
I think I know what pyrat would like to do B4.. kill the evil spawn he created... nopesport.
Then you will all have time to go to Iceland and buy frozen peas.
Seasons Greetings,
Scrooge x
PS The Giant's Causeway is massively overrated, one of the biggest disappointments of my life. I was really excited about it too. Need to lower my expectations about such things...

Re: B4UDIE
Agree re giants causeway. It was nice and we visited it as were in the area, but if I go to NI at Easter I won't bother returning. It was just an interesting rock formation.
Cross country skiing in Norway was much more fun, and the Northern lights there are spectacular. It's a shame Waymark closed down as their xc holidays were excellent.
Agree with Harry in that in my 40s I've now done the things I really wanted to do and that were realistically achievable.
To see kingfishers you need to kayak as the only time I saw them was when I lived in N England and used to kayak regularly. Kayaking is fun when it's not terrifying, but there is alot of time spent putting kayak on roofrack, transporting kayak to start of route where you meet up with friends, drive enough cars to end of route to allow you all to return to start to pick up cars there. Return to start. Kayak down river then pick up cars left at start, return to finish and load kayak. A 2h river trip can take all day, although there is no risk assessment or controls to put out. There was also the odd eccentric landowner who used to come down and swear at us as we passed.
I'm left with a list of things that would be "quite nice to do, maybe, if I can be bothered..."

Re: B4UDIE
It's easy to have ideas, harder to make things happen.
Fair enough it does take a few years for some ideas to become reality (ie wait for an injury which means you can't run for a few days..?)
eg. Kayaking in Nassafjarden
http://scoop.simplyexcited.co.uk/2010/0 ... chipelago/
In general we make things happen that we really want.
The things that don't happen, we didn't really want.
PS Glad someone finally agrees with me about Giants Causeway! I imagined it bigger, each bit to be bigger. False advertising by whoever named it and took the pictures I'd seen on postcards.

Re: B4UDIE
I've a sneaky feeling that Frog and Harry are actually the same person but at two different points in their life - or is that breaking the Law of Relativity?
I also did most of the big things I wanted to do when I was young - all except the aforementioned New Zealand trip which is firmly on the drawing board and just awaiting the empty nest and full purse to do it properly.
Small ambitions shouldn't be sneered at, they show you have a soul and it's interesting to hear what other people aspire to. Nopesport helped me tick one off a couple of years ago when I went to The Globe Theatre for the first time during the London City Race weekend - I commend a visit to everyone - it only costs £5 to stand in the yard for a performance.
I'm sorry to hear Pyrat regrets his part in nopesport - it has given a lot of people a great deal of fun - that is something he should be proud of.

Totally agree!! Mrs H.
On a personal level and mainly orienteering based I made a list of News Years Resolutions of things I wanted to do this year!!!! And amazingly have managed to do most of them.
Attended a regional event - 5 actually, Attended a multiday - went to White Rose. Organised an event. Yep did my first one on Sunday.
Still got to get the hang of using a compass, and then using it and moving at the same time, and I do not mind not getting my light green colour coded badge.
Next year I hope to enter a family team at White rose in the relay.
Out of orienteering I would love to go to Scotland, but 6 kids, do not bode well.

I have to disagree with that. I have seen kingfishers on a handful of occasions whilst canal boating. Most memorable were the ones we saw on the Tame Valley Canal in the heart of Birmingham.

Harry is not a real person though!
Big or small: if you dream it, you can do it (walt disney)
Remember what forum we're in, I'm sure deep, deep down pyrat is glowing with pride.
