For your amusement and not entirely unrelated to orienteering: I am the amusingly entitled Recreational Representative (I guess that means I don't have to take it too seriously) on the Castlemorton Common Co-ordinating committee which is basically a bunch of farmers trying to get money out of the government for grazing the land. It meets twice a year and every time I come home after a meeting I feel like I've spent the evening on the set of Midsomer Murders or in one of The Archers more far fetched story lines.
Now I know why
Suffice to say both the protagonist and one of his named victims are also on the committee. I used to think the chairman was a bit heavy handed - now I think he's doing a fantastic job having avoided any physical violence to date

Re: Castlemorton Capers
I lived in a small village, not too far from Castlemorton as a child from mid 1960s to mid 1970s. One parent who worked for then Severn River Authority and another worked for Family Planning Association and provided ante natal classes, involving fathers (very unusual then), many of whom were sheep farmers, concerned that their children wouldn't be born arms first like their lambs, while failing to provide contraception for our guinea pigs (except by keeping them in separate runs / hutches). The story is all too easy to believe!
No violence, fortunately, in my times there, but lots of reproduction.
Unfortunately, we didn't discover orienteering until I was an adult, but have returned to MADO territory a couple of times to introduce my parents, sister & her kids to the sport.

Village life can breed seething resentment, it seems. I read this story just the other day: Village row at High Court costs millions in legal fees

I said hello to my rarely seen neighbours the other day (after all what is the harm in saying hello to someone in residentail surrey) - I now get the distinct impression that I'm now perceived to be 'that strange man from number 32'!
