I'm thinking of applying for a job in some random highland lodge this summer in the middle of nowhere.
it is in fact in the middle of nowhere in the north west of scotland quite a bit north of ullapool middle of nowhere.
map here
so what do people think? should i try and get this crazy job?
pros: good money, could do some good training in the hills, ahh the great outdoors, wouldn't spend any money, everyone else is leaving edinburgh for the summer, i wouldn't have to hear about how good a time everyone is having at eoc/jwoc/oringen/tours etc,
cons: the novelty would quickly wear off, probably no access to the outside world, probably no internet access, getting shot at when training

brooner, it'll be ace, and if you get bored at any point you could nip down to locj inver to the ace pie shop, go on the most northerly orienteering area in GB, nip to the other end of loch assynt to Inchnadampfh, where the 2nd year geo people have their 2 week field trip, and there are 2, one at the start of summer, one and the end, and there are some awesome hills there, and great geology too!!!
and i might come and visit if the weather is nice (or i that too much of a threat! )
and you could nip up Suilven in the mornings!!

Just north of the place on your map is a place called Sandwood bay (I think) you have to walk or maountain bike several k to get there and it's worth it. It miles long with a stack rock at one end and a waterfall or warm water at the end (if the weather's been good and it has warmed up in the loch) - I have the feeling lots of people camp up there and hang out of a weekend. We went after the Scottish last year and met a lot of people going as we were cycling back, On the north coast there are some fantastic beaches (I mean like the best I've ever seen anywhere in the world) The tiny town of Durness is the place which inspired John Lennon to write "There are places I remember all my life" and the view west from the old fish packing hut at Betty Hill ( a town not a farmers wife) is simply awesome. We hope to take the H van up again after the Scottish next year. So on balance i'd say
DO IT.
DO IT.

Oh dear! did I get the parlance wrong Never mind I think Brooner will understand that all I'm trying to say is that this is one of the most special places in Great Britian - and yes Ifor is also right - the midges could be a real problem I've been trying to get a picture on here and I've followed all the instructions but it won't work - I'll e-mail it to Brooner

Justdo it Brooner, get back to the Highland jobby and enjoy your home land. Take your big boom box and get the chooooooooooooonnnnnnss going on the beach. I spent a summer in the middle of nowhere at Creag Meagidh and it was spot on banter, just take lots of wine, it's the way forward.
