don't worry dover the bear wouldn't chew you for long, you probably taste of vegetables.

it has just occured to me that bears are omnivores,dam.

oh well maybe you should have poked it in the eye thus leaving it temporarily blind long enough to make your escape. Thats what i did the other day when i met a wild bear out in the wilderness of teviothead where bears are not uncommon!

any chance of postin some pictures of the rocky scenery if not of the bear?

did i hell, too busy thinking about how i was going to remove my chocolate hostage from my running shorts.

i'll be posting some rocky mountain photos on my website when i bring it back into action in around a weeks time. in the meantime i'll be on the lookout for other wildlife to add to my encounter list. i hear the cougars around here are pretty mean.

Phew, bear at 10m! that's definitely too close for comfort. Just bin the keks.

Reminds me of the time we were walking in a game park in SA (no big cats or sharks so it was deemed ok). We had a 50m walk from the road to a viewpoint and had failed to notice the buffalo standing in the deep shade of a tree just off the track. Now buffalo are reputedly the most dangerous creatures on the planet as they kill more peeps than any other animal - so this was a considerable oversight.
The buffalo was taking no notice of us until Carol suddenly screeched 'BUFFLO!' at the top of her voice (ie very very loudly), legged 20m back to the car and locked herself in (why the locks, Carol?, why?), leaving the rest of the party to find cover behind ... well, behind nothing. Luckily the bufflo was far more scared of us (or at least it was scared of Carol) so it just turned and ran off, probably with its ears bleeding.

was wondering how long it would take someone to pick up on that one.. he he he... weren't many cougars in calgary though, more wildcats! roooarghh!!
