I thought I already was. A pound it is. And a round of golf paid for by the loser of the bet. How many years do you want/need?
I reckon five.

i think my bluff has finally been called. a round of golf could be a bit expensive for some silly banter.
i will however play you at golf and we could have a pound bet on the outcome of that. day after captains..!?

sending these links might push this topic out of banter into higher scientific strata, but I'll take a risk and leave it up to you to look if you're feeling up to statistics
Yes, birth rate has seasonal variation. Highest in UK from April through to September. Tables at
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/P ... ?vlnk=5768
but, it differs across the world, see
http://www.annalsnyas.org/cgi/content/a ... f_ipsecsha
and it may be even more different for male births than female (hope I got these links the right way round)

not sure where that leaves us...

I was born in winter but am not that great. Why should it make a difference?
I reckon a more important factor is whether you have a birthday late in the year or early. Those with bday late in the year will be younger for their age class and perhaps fitter, but those with early birthdays will be older and more experienced than their competitors... Which is better?[/quote]

I'm not sure your age relative to your peers matters once your past about 12, probably younger. I've always had this simplistic view:
When you're a junior it's who's growing up fastest will win. When you hit about 25 onward it's who's getting old the slowest will win. Unfortunately I filled out late and it seems I'm getting old early
Why should being born in summer/winter make a difference. Well it's just stats but at a guess it's probably due to ambient temperatues during pregnancy or just after birth. Go away work out your own theories...

More O people born in summer may just be evidence of NO seasonal bias 'cos you'd expect more orienteers to be born in the summer, 'cos more people are born in summer than winter in UK (and i have a feeling one of those links said that's more pronounced in Scandinavia, so might even be more true there).
Lots of sports have shown apparent "seasonal bias". With soccer think it's autumn-born who get most look in, and was thought to do with them being older and bigger when they start school in Sept and therefore more likely to be put into teams.
If that were case then might partly explain athletics findings, as your age group changes on different dates for the athletics season and the cross-country season, thus putting different groups at more advantage in early life for sprinting or endurance and thus influencing their choice of distance?
O changes age group at end Dec. Not as many people are born in Jan-April as in May to Aug, so the biggest group to benefit from being older and stronger would be summer bdays.
Some findings could also relate to months in which babies start to get really active re crawling/walking. So winter born have advantage of summer months to get cracking on mobility, and maybe get a head start over summer-born?.Not sure at what point your balance slow twitch/fast twitch gets decided.
OK, those are just random hypotheses. Go on and knock 'em down!
