When I mentioned I was orienteering in Maulden Wood tomorrow my spouse reminded me of the 'A6 murder' carried out by Hanratty at that very place. Not so long ago I was orienteering in Kings Wood where terrorists stashed bomb ingredients they were planning to use to blow up aircraft.
I have long thought that if anyone is going to stumble across a body in the woods (the favoured resting place of corpses in TV crime dramas) it will be an orienteer. Does anyone else have any interesting crime related orienteering areas?

There is a Beck detective novel (famous Swedish version of Morse or whoever), in which an orienteer finds a body in the woods. They filmed it a couple of years ago and got extras (including me) from the local orienteering club.

[PLUG ALERT] As Ray Demense (venue of the Northern Championships) is in prime Reiver territory (the nearby but expensive petrol station is called the Border Reivers) there are bound to have been some violent deaths there as the English and the Scots fought .
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Sounds like the Northern Championships are being held at a person rather than a place.
Back down South a murdered body was found at Leith Hill in 1992. On a fictional note Burnham Beeches appeared as 'Monks Barton Woods' in Midsomer Murders.

I don't know about a Beck novel but my brother lent me a Wallender book by Mankell where an orienteer going out for some night orienteering practice finds a body in the woods. When the BBC filmed it I think they turned the night orienteer into some other activity.
I believe there's serious doubt about the Hanratty conviction now though.

Orienteering was certainly featured in one of the (superior) Swedish versions of Wallander, starring Christer Henriksson, when an orienteer found a body in the woods whilst out training. It wasn't at night though. Also they had an orienteering map on the wall in the incident room in one of the episodes.

I'm sure a NATO planner/controller found a body at Simonside? or Kielder, many years ago

Some of Nato retrieved Lockerbie debris from Kielder - I personally found a passport which upset a number of us - is that what you are thinking of?

Here's an email I got last night...
rocky wrote:Sending this email from the back of a police car. About to take the boys in blue night orienteering at gullane.
When I was down there this afternoon I found a handgun under a tree by 134. I didn't fancy carrying it round with me while mapped the bushes on the dunes so I left it there and reported it to St leonards. I gave them an o map to help them find it but they didn't fancy that so came an picked me up to take me out training tonight...
Needless to say this has somewhat interrupted my finalizing of the courses. I'll get them to you asap.
What an adventure!

I don't know if it was the planner/controller, but a body was found at Simonside in the early 1980's.
