An Indian chief had three squaws, each living in a separate teepee. Because he was out hunting all day and it was dark when he returned, he couldn't tell which squaw was in which teepee, so he carpeted each with a different animal hide: the first squaw's teepee had a hippopotamus hide, the second a buffalo's, the third a bear's.

As it happened, all three squaws became pregnant and duly gave birth to the chief's children. The squaw who rested on bear hide had a boy; the squaw on buffalo hide a girl, and the squaw on the hippopotamus hide had both a boy and a girl.

This proves that the squaw on the hippopotamus is equal to the sum of the squaws on the other two hides.
