this makes for more interesting reading...
Excellent link that Ben, a rare example of well researched and balanced writing from a journalist. It has helped restore my wavering faith in human nature after my last rant
The trouble is that it was far too long to get into any tabloid hate rag, or even the drastically dumbed down pages of the BBC website.
I also still don't know whether Riggwelter has got his tenner for the OMM mid-camp treat yet. After seeing what a miserable git I am he might not even want to share a tent with me now either

OK, here's Riggwelter's tenner, though I'm not sure how you will turn it into a mid-camp treat.

Ben, as an occasional Guardian reader I applaud them for that and more power to them. Sadly there is always an element of preaching to the converted with newspapers. The vast majority of people reading that paper would have accepted it as an intelligent well balanced perspective. Or at least put a reasoned argument against it. I suspect that most people who normally read what I refer to as "tabloid hate rags" would react differently.
But thanks for pointing it out, I'm sorry I missed the original.

Sorry to bring back this stupid topic but i just read this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6074286.stm
I can't believe how much people go on and on about this sort of thing. Tomorrow im going to an eid dinner with some of my classmates and to be honest i dont give a toss about what traditions this muslim festival celebrates although i will make every effort to find out. As far as im concerned its just a chance to get some banter, my muslim classmates dont care that i dont share their beliefs but they are grateful for my interest in their culture as i am interested in their interest in deep frying random foodstuffs.
Politicans keep calling for a debate on all this. What debate? Let people behave the way they want to as long as they dont break the law of the land. I dont care if i see a woman wearing a veil, i have met and spoke to a woman who wore the veil and found it unnerving but respected that it was their choice. It WOULD be a different case if i was working with someone with a veil and found it to be somehow detrimental to the standard of work they produced, but as far as im concerned it would be an internal debate with the boss and not the entire country, media and politicians. The way the media plays it up all the time you would have thought that we were heading for a modern day crusade over something that i think 99.999% of the population really dont care about.
I have met the 0.001% before, she was the parent of one of the kids i teach at chess club. When i handed out chocolate eggs that i had bought for the easter break she told me that under no circumstances would her children be involved in celebrating a 'christian' holiday (as far as i understand she is an atheist). I was quite happy with the extra chocolate for me but I pointed out to her that all i was trying to celebrate was chocolate and all she could do was blush and explain to her kids why they werent getting chocolate and everyone else in the class was. We laugh at the americans and their debate over creationism but i think this debate is just as pointless and boring.
