Iban Mayo is at the rear of the peloton. There are two team-mates waiting for him (Camano and Unai Etxebarria) but Iban doesn't look like his got much hope of staying with the bunch on the 4th climb of today's stage

The leader of the Euskaltel team is not the climber he was last year. He reached the top of the Col d'Agnes 14'05" behind Rasmussen.

Mayo is a very good climber, but like most climbers he is a crap time-trailist on the flat compared to the likes of armstrong or ullrich.

Hmm, indeed. Let me explain: when someone has a bad few days in the mountains, it doesn't mean they are not a climber - likewise, if an orienteer has a bad day, it doesn't mean they are no longer an orienteer; a marathon runner is still a marathon runner after a bad 26 miles. That is their speciality. Saying "he is not the climber he was" just means he is not in the kind of form he was in last year. Mayo IS a climber, one of the best of the few natural climbers around. Its just that falls & subsequent injury has caused him to suffer more than usual.
Anyway, looks like unless Basso can do something big on wednesday, Armstrong has his sixth tour in the bag.

yey lol......ok, sorry, i no mayo's a climber but if you look at his results from various races all year they have all been quite poor, whether on the mountains or flat.

What about the dauphine libere???? Winning the uphill time-trial on ventoux isn't really going "quite poor"

Mind you I'm not really sure what happens when they get to the tour, usps and armstrong just seem to put the fear of god into them, and most top guys start going backwards. I guess the week before the hills when they do stages day after day at 45km/hr take a bit more out of them than the ordinary stage races.

Anyway fingers crossed for some surprises in the Alps, c'mon Basso and the rest of them.
