Reminds me of a time many moons ago in Portugal at a training camp where there were many hire cars exactly the same as each other.... everyone leaves the keys in the same place.... so easy to move the cars around in the parking area and sit back and watch

This news story made me think a bit about what I do with my car keys whilst running.

Is putting your keys in a tub with everybody else's any safer than hiding them behind a wheel (or wherever)? I personally think it's less secure. I've never known a club take responsibility for car keys. It's basically a free-for-all. As long as you look like you've just been running, you can help yourself to whichever set of keys take your fancy and walk around the car park until you find the car to which they belong.

Has anyone ever had their car stolen having put their keys in 'safe' keeping of the organising club? Is it just a matter of time and what would be the implication?

Edit: this is actually a serious topic and maybe worthy of a move to the discussion forum if there's a moderator listening?

The only people who know about the car key box are people at the event, and I doubt there are many participants of our events who are car thieves.

However, knowing that people go to remote forest car parks and leave their keys "hidden" under their car is probably more widely known.

I tend to leave the keys hidden some meters from the car so any would be thieves are very unlikely to ever find it.

At a Croeso event many years ago I was working at enquiries and we had a system to reasonably take care of car keys. However one competitor had left their key in their cagoule which they left in the back of the enquiries tent only for the cagoule to go missing during the event.

Resulted in a visit from an AA van to sort this out before we locked the forest gates.
