There is a thread about flights to the World Masters in Sydney, but could we discuss it here for anyone going / interested in going...
Do you need to register for the actual 'World MAsters Games' as well as the orienteering?
What accommodation have people found?
Have looked at Saga and cheapflights.com, but where is best for booking British Airways/Qanatas etc... and for anyone who has travelled to Oz before, is it better to have a stopover, and where do people recommend?

I wouldn't want to do it without a stopover . I can recommend Kuala Lumpur, which is a pretty interesting place to spend twenty-four hours, and where (with a bit of shopping around) you can stay in five-star luxury for the cost of a B&B in Bournemouth.

Re: World Masters 2009 - Sydney, Australia
I've been to Australia four times and will be going again later this year (sadly not for the Masters) and have always done a stopover because 24 hours on a plane in 'cattle class' is not a lot of fun.
I've stopped at Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai and all have their advantages and disadvantages. My favourite is Hong Kong and they even have permanent 'O' courses there. It's not as hot as Dubai nor as hot and humid and Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
It is, of course, more expensive to stop than to go straight through but good quality hotels are relatively cheap so it isn't too prohibitive. It also helps with the jet lag (Sydney is 9 hours ahead at the moment and 11 hours during the Winter months).

LOT
Yes you do need to register for the games to enter WMOC - and pay the fee .
Stopovers I have used in the past and are good imo:
Kuala Lumpa, Singapore, Los Angeles (going wrong way round) have also gone all the way with a 2.5 hr refuel at KL and Singapore, which wasn't too bad on BA/Quantas Air NZ (to NZ of course) and Air Malaysia. People who travel there semi-regularly with work reckon Emirates is the best value for money (not necessarily the cheapest).
We are going out early for the Bushranger Carnival and ACT 2-days as well - so went for the simple option of geting a company to book the hotels, motels, flights, hire car.
Used Gullivers this time and have used Travelmood in the past. Simply give the company a rough itinery and they do the rest - lazy man's answer.

I assume you meant 4 October?
I also assume you thought that only club teams were official in the relays. This isn't the case - non-Australian national teams are also official (and we hope to get plenty of them).
For those who are young enough to be thinking about such things, the Aus Sprint and Aus Long Championships are WREs.

(who's hoping that the across-the-lake-to-the-spectator-control view at the Aus Sprint is restored to its former glory by October - was up there doing some controlling on Friday and the local council have drained the lake to try to get rid of some aquatic weeds)

Yeah Mike maybe we can run in a team together instead of just sitting in a S6day tent

Eddie,
that's great - I'll wait and see who else is interested. I'm happy to co-ord the entries for anyone who wants a relay run.
Blair, thanks for the clarity - not sure any team containing me is competitive anywhere

Re: World Masters 2009 - Sydney, Australia
Chris and I will be at WMG. entry done last July (earlybird) rates along with Turners (SLOW) and Kingdons (SAX)
Chris and I are aiming at all the events before
19-20/9 Queensland
26/9 - 4/10 Victoria (and especially want to do relay)
6+7/10 ACT
I was looking at entries for these and they are all different - (no combined package)
Queensland has online entry but not payment (I think I'll ask if I can turn up with cash)
Victoria hasn't set anything up yet
ACT has online entry and payment
- so its inverse correlation between profile and efficiency at the moment.
Flights were booked through Trailfinders - much cheaper than anything I could work out on airlines websites directly
No stopover - use to do that and decided it was a waste of time.
Accomm booked for Sydney and Lithgow. Many other nights at various properties owned by Chris's sister!!! I think one of them may back on to the Oz Middle Champs area. But a few other hotels still to sort out.

try emailing them to ask? you are somewhat unlikely to get an answer to this on nopesport!

I'll give you an answer on this forum
Absolutely no chance; get real
The World masters is very much a jolly for oldies with the money to enjoy it.

The money BOF uses for its International Programme is grant funding (currently from UK Sport). As such, it cannot be used for other purposes, even if BOF wanted to support athletes at WMOC.
Strictly you are not "representing" GB at WMOC, you are an individual who is British. Good luck!

Re: World Masters 2009 - Sydney, Australia
Had BOF been concerned about the costs (financial & environmental...) of WMOC it could've attempted to use its influence within the IOF to object to having WMOC down under (nothing wrong with Oz/NZ, but 3 times in 10 years??) and/or to having it hitched to the World Masters Games, registration for which ups the costs considerably. Not sure what BOF's position was on either of those points...but sure someone here can enlighten me
