Re: Istanbul 5 days
Yes I went, and it is a really great event. Really well organised in a reasonably laid back fashion with helpful, friendly folk on hand to deal with any queries. Pretty slick setup with commentary, music, prizes, buses to events, end of week party on a boat and really good orienteering in pretty nice, physical terrain (the main issue I had with the terrain was with the patches of thorny undergrowth in the Belegrad forest, think waist high things that are more brutal than brambles!).
I presume you're talking about the map of the Grand Bazaar, which they frustratingly take off you at the end of the race, some sort of security reason that they have agreed with the police. Apart from that, it was probably the most fun orienteering race I've ever done, charging around tiny darkened alleys lined with shops, up and down confusing staircases and getting thoroughly confused whenever different levels were involved, its enough to have me tempted to go back again this year. A few pics and the like here
This is where we think the course went, when we tried to remember it to draw onto a tourist map. I did later (randomly) meet a fellow competitor in the grand bazaar who was wondering round with an old copy of the map trying to remember where his course went, and got a photo of his map, but I don't seem to have uploaded it so will dig that out for you.
Day 2, Sprint Race
Its worth staying at the event centre hotel if you can as its reasonably cheap, well located on the historic side of town and about 5 minutes walk from where the buses went from and it has a lovely roof terrace for breakfast views over the city.

Possibly, if only to get the dvd i ordered from last year's event! I'd heartily recommend anyone to think about making the trip over though, a great event.
Pyrat: (Stupidly) straightish then along roads through the olive green then in from the carpark (it was pretty similar to going right).

Who is going to Istanbul event this year? How about a 'Brits' party or meeting up on the Boat Party?
Where are people staying?
Any tips from anyone who has been before?

Read all about the race and see the Grand Bizaar Map in the DEC08 issue of CompassSport.
