We are thinking of going over to Sweden but can't work out which ferry goes there. The Newcastle - Gothenburg is no longer running by DFDS.
The only way I could see doing it was to get the Harwich to Esbjerg (Denmark) ferry, then the Frederikshavn to Gothenburg ferry.
We do not want to fly as we want to explore the country in our van.
Maybe an alternative is to drive all the way!
Ferry to Sweden ?

Re: Ferry to Sweden ?
There is no longer a direct ferry to Sweden (see my compassSport article this time last year). We have found a good way is the fast ferry to Hook of holland (No longer in service but there is a slow one) then drive over to the Putgarten crossing and the Helsingborg crossing (both about 20 mins buy a through ticket it's cheaper).
the thing you have to watch with the Esberg crossing is the cost of the bridge crossings in Denmark (mind you we were in the h. van).
an alternative is the ferry from Newcastle to norway it goes to about 3 different places including Bergen and is a good bet for this year's O-ringen. Fly-drive can work out cheaper - as long as you don't try to hire a car in norway.

Cheapest way must be to fly to Vilnius on Air Baltic & then hitch a lift across to O Ringen with the millions of Lithuanians who are in one of the organizing clubs... IFK Mora:)
Apart from that.... car hire in Sweden is cheap in July...

Re: Ferry to Sweden ?
I would only drive now if i was going for a long trip in the H van and then I would usually go Hook of Holland-Puttgarten-Helsingborg ( i wouldn't bother driving a car out) and we have noted in the past when time has been tight at the end of term that it was actually cheaper for me and the kids to fly out luggage free with ryanair and get picked up by Mr H at the other end with him having a shared cabin than for us all to go out on the ferry (being 5 of us and possibly having a 6 berth cabin to ourselves)
Otherwise i would fly drive - we did it last year with ryanair and still managed enough camping equipment for 5 although we were only there for a week.
This year we are not even hiring a car and taking advantage of the buses from Oslo airport flying BA (Airmiles-free luggage). obviously no camping equipment required.
I had hoped we would go for the whole summer but family arrangements proved too complicated - might have considered Newcastle to Haugusund then!

We scoured all the options on this one - youre quite right Mrs H car hire in Norway is expensive. We decided that for 4 people the cost of going by ferry in a 4-berth cabin was really not that much greater than doing a fly/drive and actually quite a reasonable deal when compared with fly/bus, taking the extra convenience into account and that the times of departure and arrival are so much more civilised.
We're going Newcastle/Stavanger (gets you onto Norwegian roads so much earlier in the day than Haugesund even if the drive to Salen is a tad longer) and coming back from Bergen after a few days meandering through Norway. Looking forward to it, which I wasnt when I considered the other options.
