yep, richmond park is where I intend to be running at the weekend.
As for 12 hours in london, depends what you like really. There are loads of touristy things you can see within a short distance. You could do something like get the district line into embankment, wander about covent garden -> trafalgar sq (national gallery is free) -> along whitehall-> through horse guards parade-> across st james park towards buck house -> westminster abbey -> back across towards the river & houses of parliament. cross river, walk along south bank, past london eye, towards tate modern, then cross over and there's the tower and st pauls.
or there's lots of cool markets (e.g. camden)
and the science museum is good (and free).
check out timeout.co.uk and there might be some cool mini festivals on.

If you cross over the river by Tate Modern on the wobbly bridge to St Paul's then carry on north to Smithfield market, there's the Wallace Memorial (where he was hung and drawn and quatered). A place of pilgrimage for all Scotsmen.
You could also go from St Paul's to the Monument, along the Thames path to the Tower and Tower Bridge, and back along the south bank past HMS Belfast. There are various open top buses and river trips and even "Duck Tours" http://www.londonducktours.co.uk/ which combine both on an old army amphibious vehicle, but they may be outside your budget. If you're going on the tube, get a one-day travelcard thingy which I think are about £6 now.
Or you could just find a pub and have few beers with Brooner

substitute "pub" for "marquee on the lawn", "few beers" for "lots of beers then a few bottles of champers", and "brooner" for "brooner, eddie, becks, whb, bilson, lucy j, janey and more current and ex- edinburgers" and you've got last saturday night.
as for the 12 hours we did pretty much what you describe jayne, 'cept we started at the millenium bridge and st pauls and didn't got to the museums.
then eddie found us and took us to camden.
and the next day we went for a hangover run round richmond park! hurrah!
then i missed my train home so stayed there for another couple of days anyway!

twas said tour de britain finale (along with regent st festival, A40 bus crash and burst water main at earls court) which casued the congestion which combined with the circle line being closed for repairs meant we missed the train! went back to whb's to help them tidy up and gossip about the previous night over sunday dinner!
