bear in mind that this is dated information... i've travelled through sweden a couple of times on inter-rail tickets.
basically i had no problem hopping on/off trains with an interrail ticket, apart from the mainline x2000 high speed trains. these are more expensive and often fully booked.
as for buying tickets on the day i can't see that being a big problem. as for efficiency, well it's sweden. you can probably bank on setting your watch by the train arriving/departing.

You can check the trains, buses etc at http://www.resplus.se (they site is also in English)
According to the infor I have for the Öresundståget
(the wee train between Copenhagen and Malmö) the cost is 87 SEK for an adult single (check at http://www.skanetrafiken.se). It costs 50 SEK more if you but the ticket on the train.
If you're going further than Malmö or elsewhere in Skåne check http://www.sj.se for the prices for long distance trains. You won't get a student discount but if you're under 26 you'll get the youth discount. Like someone else has already said though, the prices shown for SJ journeys vary from minute to minute.
Booking is normally required for the X2000 trains.

With the X2000 trains, booking a ticket really only means that you can't buy a ticket on the train as you need a seat reservation. By buying the ticket at the station you will get this, even if it is just before the train leaves (as long as there are seats left - avoid rush hour etc). If you're under 26 (sorry, I haven't a scooby who you are but I don't think you're a pensioner) then you just ask for a youth ticket. I don't think it's possible to buy tickets over the internet from the UK but if you know when you will arrive and what train you are getting, you may be able to book a ticket and then pick it up from a machine (but I can't tell you much more than that).

go to http://www.sj.se and you can buy your train ticket now. you'd have to have an address for it to be sent to though and not sure if they post to england. you can at least get the train times and swedish trains run like clockwork. alternatively buy it at the station and you can get a sistaminuten (last minute) ticket which is always cheap. the under 26 ticket is called an ungdomsbiljet and is usually between 50% and 70% the price of an adult ticket. to get from malmo to skillingaryd will take you approx 3 hours and you have to change once.[/url]
