The environment surrounding British sport is changing. Participation is generally reducing. It is becoming more dificult to attract young people into sport because in a more affluent and mobile society there is more choice of how to spend free time. The same dynamic applies to volunteers; people are far less likely to give up valuable time.
I think this attitude of people being less willing to volunteer is rubish. Just look around and see how much time so many people put into the sport for no financial gain. Nopesport and juniors/ young adults in my club prove to me that the young are just as willing to put the time in as the older members of our sport.
Our problem is that we have not got enough young people to take over when we oldies have to give up. My club has over 5 times the number of 45-60yrs as 21-35yrs.
We need to get young adults into our sport for it to survive. Over the last decade I haven't seen any concerted effort to capture this age group. The strategic plan has a lot to do with attracting children rather than adults but this will only put added burden on overworked volunteers.
We need to attract young adults. HOW? Nopesport is certainly a start, a dambed good one.
