For those who enjoyed the 6-Days and want more top Scottish Orienteering - come to Aberdeenshire for the weekend of 10/11th October and sample 2 great areas.
Maroc and Gramp are holding 2 Regional events this weekend, Coull and Sands of Forvie. Coull was originally used for Deeside '83 and was last used about 15 years ago (a problem with pheasants and shooters...). A new resurveyed map has been produced and the area is still interesting and varied with good technical areas and much lovely runnable pine forest. Forvie is an open sand-dune area (a National Nature Reserve) where access has only been allowed in the last 3 years. The contour detail is mind boggling in places and will offer a great contrast to Saturday's runnable pine forest.

for Coull you'll have to find someone who is old enough to have orienteered there previously!
Cheap flights to Aberdeen, Inverness or Edinburgh airports offer a chance for anyone in Britain to come and enjoy a great weekend.

Re: More top Scottish Orienteering
Last time I looked you could do Luton/Aberdeen or Gatwick/Inverness for less than £60 return that weekend and something similar for Birmingham/Aberdeen. Both areas are within an hours drive of Aberdeen.

Planners for both races are very experienced orienteers - Roger Coombs for Coull and Doug Guy for Forvie.

For Coull, parking will be in the grounds of a Deeside castle, and some courses at least will have cracking views of Lochnagar, Mt Keen and Morven.

I remember Coull from Deeside 83. It was cool.
To my knowledge it has not been used while I have been living here and that's more like 20 years.

Misread this post as "peasants and shooters" the first time. Still made sense though!

Of course not Becks! - but I have several times over the past few years and it is great runnable detailed contours and slopes with just enough smattering of rocks and cliffs to make it exciting. all with lovely runnable pine forest.

Re: More top Scottish Orienteering
Anyone prepared to scan and post an old Coull map then so the rest of us can do some armchair preparation?
Plus - do we know the distance to the starts and finish -> assemly yet? ie is there enough time for split starts for those of us who need 1 hour plus (discounting mistakes) to get round?

At Coull the start and finish are in close proximity to one another, both being about 15 minutes walk from the car park.

Re: More top Scottish Orienteering
Just been out checking planners comments - first time in the bracken season and I was surprised by how little it impeded my progress, some small areas of desperate bracken (mostly in clearings) but easily avoided and most of the forest is pretty clear of the weed. Bracken is also starting to die back (dry weather and some chilly nights recently).
