If you get access to the course before the event you could work out all your transits and attack points, checking distances and climb and get much more benefit than that a GPS could give you.
(obviously all would fall apart when you realised that the path was 3ft deep in mud and the undergrowth impenetrable -but then no battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy)

Of course it helps. Screens are banned, so you can't just openly watch your big screen any more. There is lots of eyes in the forest after all. Now you can disqualify someone trying it. Without this rule disqualifying would be impossible. Even if it looks like someone clearly cheats - push button, memory erased, evidence gone.

so couldn't this be done by officials at prestart? then there's no cause for concern

Re: New IOF Ruling on GPS Watches
If you are willing to cheat then you are probably willing to wear a "clean" watch on your wrist and hide the one with the winning route on it down your pants...
it's easier just to ban them, it's only at WRE events, not a massive problem. it'll probably get to the point in a few years where you have to carry trac-trac style GPS units at WRE's anywya so will get a GPS track afterwards...

Re: New IOF Ruling on GPS Watches
I wonder if cheating is a bigger problem outside of the UK.
This may be because the sport does not have such a high profile in the UK, so winning does not carry so much "value".
In my limited experience of orienteering outside the UK I have heard of/seen more examples of the following than at home:
Being pushed out of the way at a control.
Having your location on the map demanded by another competitor.
Being asked "where are we?"
Map grabbed by another competitor.
Shouts of "it's over here".
All the above are against the rules or spirit of them.
I realise that this is a sweeping statement, but generally us Brits tend to be obey/comply with laws/rules more than most. Look at how we quietly queue for anything.

But it will also apply to WMOC - which for many, possibly the majority of, competitors is more of a holiday event than an 'elite' race.
As this rule seems to apply to all IOF events it seems logical that BOF, and other countries, will soon follow suit and ban the use of GPS watches at all events.

Yeah - could be a bit tricky getting the SI SI Card in and out quick enough on the flypast. Probably only worth trying at events with EMIT
Orienteering - its no walk in the park

I'd use laser guidance and a long piece of elastic!
