Hi,
Does anyone know when/where/if the PPs are being held this year as I cannot find anything on the BO Events page. I know from past years that they are usually held in Sept and the closing date is usually in the school summer holidays.
Thanks
Phil

The South-East fixture secretary's planner says 27th September - COBOC - Sutton Park, but I would treat this as an unsubstantiated rumour unless and until the alleged organising club issues some information.

Yes and she has more insider info too
TO CHAIRS OR SECRETARIES OF WMOA CLUBS AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES
Hi,
as you may know by now, COBOC is once again hosting the Peter Palmer Junior Team Relay this year in Sutton Park in September.
I suppose we can allow you a little snigger, taking into account the size of COBOC (probably the smallest club in the WMOA) taking on this rather large task!
Of course it wouldn't be possible without the help, support and cooperation we have received in the past from our fellow West Midlands clubs.
Once again we are asking for your clubs help in putting on this prestigious junior event.
We are holding our first organising meeting on Wednesday 22nd April at 7.30 at the
Clifton Road Outdoor Education Centre in Sutton Coldfield. (B73 6EB for those with Satnav))
I am sorry that this is such short notice and will obviously understand if all interested parties are unable to attend.
If you or any member of your club is able to help and interested in coming to the meeting they will be very welcome. If they are unable to come to this meeting, we have two further meetings arranged for Wednesday 17th June and Wednesday 22nd July at the same venue.
I would be grateful if you would forward this email to anyone you think might be interested, either in your club or beyond. (It is initially being sent to club chairs/secs. RDO, planners, controller, and BOF Jun. Competitions Rep. as blind copies.)
"Expressions of interest" would be gratefully received from anyone who is willing to help!
Thanks for taking the time to read this rather long missive, and I look forward to working with our WMOA friends in putting together this exceptional Junior Event!

Re: Peter Palmers 2009
We might take a team for the first time this year.
Could anybody tell me what time most people arrive and leave, so that I can work out if it might be possible to use the train.
Is the overnight accomodation (for a few hours sleep) in a school hall?
Is food normally included and how much does the weekend normally cost?
The distances look quite long - 4 legs of 4.5km +
Should I be looking for at least 4 M/W16 and 18's for these longer legs?
With night experience on the first 2 legs?
Then using 12's and 14's on the 2 shorter legs?

I can answer the first couple of questions :
most people usually arrive sometime Saturday afternoon. There is usually an inter-club football competion on Saturday afternoon.
Train should definitely be possible - engineering works permitting. The nearest station is Sutton Coldfield on the Birmingham cross-city line - just 5 - 10 mins walk to the accommodation. Change onto this line at Birmingham New Street, or possibly Lichfield Trent Valley (but caution as only about 50% of trains go to Trent Valley, the rest stop at Lichfield City). Line runs regularly during the day, even on a Sunday.
overnight accommodation is expected to be in Clifton Road Youth Centre / Wyndley Leisure Centre again (t.b.c.) - floorspace in halls of varying size. This is right on the edge of the park and approx 5 mins walk to start / leg exchange (subject to course planning)
Sutton Town centre (chip shops, Macdonalds etc.) is 5 - 10 mins walk.
Sutton Park is quite runnable, with a mixture of open heath and woods and a good path network. There are some hills but nothing "big".
Age groups per leg really depends on the ability and endurance of the individuals. I will leave others with team composition experience to respond on this.
Start is normally "in the gloaming" not pitch dark. Lights should definitely be used on legs 1 and 2. Whether they are needed on 3 depends on how fast your first 2 runners are. 2 years ago in Sutton Park the dawn was misty, which reduced visibility early on and added to the atmosphere. Final details of start time etc. awaited.
Leg standards vary from yellow through orange and red to green - see guidelines in downloads section on BOF website for details.
I hope this helps.

Re: Peter Palmers 2009
Denise re team composition. I think confidence is more critical than age. As a club we have always managed to enter two teams(or nearly). This means the less experienced get a chance to have a go and not feel the pressure. I think with a single team for the first time it is important to emphasise that they are going for the Peter Palmer experience. I have found that the experience is key to the kids, it is more than the orienteeering, it is the football and possibly the swimming before, if you can add something like that, also the social element of meeting other juniors. As for team selection the night legs tend to be easier than a day red but I try to gauge the confidence as well as experience as an experienced junior with no confidence would be better off running a day leg than the less experienced junior who is 'up' for the adventure. Generally girls are slightly more apprehensive about night legs. Re the yellow as you can run three on this leg (if you have the numbers) you can actually let them run as a pair if they want that security.
I hope that helps. P.S It is tiring for the supporting adults so train travel could be more restful than a long drive after the night of little sleep. Even if your group are tired you can guarantee that there will be some who have the all night mentality that we may have once had

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.
