What Is The Greatest Orienteering Area
Moderators: [nope] cartel, team nopesport
oooh thats a tough one! but new beechenhurst?!? surely nobody in their right mind would vote that britains greatest area! but penhale, pembrey, graythwaite, lossie......i dont know which to choose! hambleden's nice too, and wharncliffe. i'm not saying this is britains greatest area - not even close - but one of my personal favourites was Ham Hill where the British Sprints were last year. lovely little area!

linn of tummel the odd one out right?
but yeah the point is valid, there are [nope]loads of scottish areas better than most of those on the list. and lossie is good but there are better physical & technical tests out there in scotland.
dunno what yer races down south are going to be like but i'm looking forward to a weekend of quality terrain - achlean & roseisle - back to the homelands i go

Ok Dallaschyle is painfully bad, Darnaway is now awfully brashings, inshriach is overulled with cappercaille (is that spel wong) Plodda was a bitch, Rogie was a bit rough, Loch vaas got the awful heather, Culbins got the awful green, Where the hell are those? Airds Park was ok i spose, Coille Nathas is wet in my memory, Trossachs is too steep, as is drummond hill, and as for Dunalastair u deserve to be shot for even suggesting it. But rannoch, Docarn and Craggy Barns (but a bit steep) are quite good, but lack the runnability of lossie, which is just as technical

Trebor.... you need to get a life mate.... or find out what a real orienteering area is... but of course if we are talking real orienteering areas... then I'll put Moletai forward & the Lindjurn (spelling) and when I get back from Kazaksthan next month I might add one of them... oh... the area in US where WMOC was was pretty good too...

too steep/too rough: don't bother going to norway
oh no wet feet from marshes: dont go to scandinavia full stop
darnaway: brashings? where? weren't any in the south when i was last there, and not in the bits of the north when i was there a couple of years ago. brashings over brambles any day tho!
dunalaster is great, but only because i won the scottish champs there
lossie's dune bit is great but after that it's hardly technical, just flat and fast straight compass bearings
considering the crapness of areas down by you i think you have far too many complaints about scottish areas

Dunalastair was awful when I was 14 or so and the first person to leave the start that day - bracken two feet over my head and no tracks! Argh! I think I'd probably quite like it these days though.
Will? We've got proper fire now!

"Dallaschyle is painfully bad" - what on earth do you mean?
"Darnaway is now awfully brashings" - didn't notice any when I was there in February.
"inshriach is overulled with cappercaille (is that spel wong)" - Restrictions only apply from April to July. By the way try "overulled " and "spel" in the spelling check while you're looking for capercaillie.
"Plodda was a bitch" - but good enough for WOC Classic Race
"Rogie was a bit rough" - Ah diddums.
"Loch vaas got the awful heather" - apart from the Granish section and all the short-cropped grass bits of it. Anyway, the heather's fine if you've done some training.
"Culbins got the awful green" - What awful green? I've only run there once, but it was gorgeous, widely-spaced, mature, white forest!
"Where the hell are those?" - Deeside, and Creag Mhic's near Oban. It's one of the best areas in Britain according to some people, and was considered good enough for BOC 96.
"Airds Park was ok i spose" - Hooray!
"Coille Nathas is wet in my memory" - it rains all over Britain. Try thinking about the orienteering, not the weather.
"Trossachs is too steep" - do some training?
"as is drummond hill" - once you're on the top ridge, it's fairly flat and absolutely gorgeous. I suggest you come and run the SOL provisionally organised for 2nd October 2005, being planned by me and Dave.
"and as for Dunalastair u deserve to be shot for even suggesting it." - the natural deciduous woodland in Tullochroisk is fantastic orienteering. Admittedly, I would personally not use an area with bracken on it after May.
"But rannoch, Docarn and Craggy Barns (but a bit steep) are quite good, but lack the runnability of lossie, which is just as technical" - Docarn is highly runnable, "Craggy Barns" has low visibility a lot of the time and is also quite runnable, and Rannoch is also great - runnable and technical.
