We all have individual moment of pride after a good result but what i'm talking about is a bit of team pride.
When was the last time you felt real team pride...
Me 1998 mychete relays - 18- 2nd leg, Jamie smith has a solid first leg to bring us (CLOK) in 4:30 down on supersaint's SOC. Out i go had a blinder so much so that i was shocked when i ran in the run in and the announcer said i was first! Was chuffed for the team before being chuffed for me!! Great feeling.
Before someone says i got dsq... i will. long complicated thing about making a tit of myslef and running to the wrong specator before running to the right one and i can't have punched it properly. Advantage of being a spectator control is that everyone saw me attend the right one.
Still even though DSQ its my finest o moment.
Person i was drinkning with last night (nameless) for now said that his proudest moment was when he ran for wales in an wales - ireland match. He pulled out a late modest M21 run which resulted in wales winning!
What's yours?

Mine must be from the Senior Home's in Northern Ireland. I headed out on last leg for England's 3rd team a minute behind Tim Tett, and a couple of minutes in front of OJ, Jon Musgrave and Tim Lenton. A couple of mistakes early on and i'd already been caught after 6-7 controls. Being the only M20 on last leg i though i had nothing to lose, so did my best to keep up with the other guys, and we'd soon caught Tim up as well. OJ missed a control soon after and having passed Tim T, it was me, Big Jon and Tim L together with 1km to go. We had slightly different gaffles, and Tim L couldn't be seen as i was desperately trying to catch up the 40m lead Big Jon had got along the final track. Then Tim pops out in just behind Jon and i realised that i was the only non-Scot near the finish. With a proper sprint finish up a zig-zag run-in, i just pipped Tim on the line (had to be judged by official's it was so close) to stop Scotland taking the top 2 places. True pride for my home country (alright, Scotland still won the relay, but at least they weren't second as well).
Alternatively, Harvester 1999, Forest of Dean, went out last leg in the B race just in front of Dave Harrison, he caught me pretty quickly, and we went round the whole course together. I thought he was on their A race team, so wasn't too fussed about beating him back, but then when we got to where the maps were picked up for the next leg and i noticed he didn't pick up another map i realsied he must be in the B race. So off i go, sprints past him, SOC take victory from SYO by 1 second. You beauty!

last time... Tva Mila last Saturday. Brrrilliant.
then the three times I have won relays with Wales, SHI 2003.
JHI W13 and W18 both in Northern Ireland. Especially that first one as Wales won the M13 as well, John Morris, Rhys Davies and Andrew Hodges. Everyone was really shocked, I think we probably still came last overall but it was so funny. The English were spluttering about how it wasn't a proper orienteering area, to be fair it was some 3 day eventing park and you could see each control from the last but still.

Being part of the East Anglian Junior Squad when we won the individual day and came third overall at the Inter-Regionals. To go from Neil and I having been the only two on Lagganlia without squad o tops and never having been on a squad weekend to a team that was that good at orienteering and team spirit was a pretty amazing feeling.
Current East Anglians probably don't realise the ridicule we used to get . . . proving the stereotype wrong felt damn good.

yep två mila was pretty cool! my other best o moments are in relays too. running last leg for scotland at JHIs in 2002 when we won, my run was great but thats was nothing compared to the feeling knowing that we had won the whole competition, it was amazing. my other best moment was this year at BUSA for the same reasons. i think there is something special about team things.
it's all fun

Stricktly O wise my best moments are:
The first time I ran for Wales in the shi when I was an M17 (I am 2nd year 35 now) and I won to everyones suprise including mine.
Comming back first on the first leg of the B at the Harvester on a couple of occasions the once when I was in the 'B' team was very satisfying.
Winning the 21L course on the two occasions when I have been seeded out of running E once at the JK once at the British.

BUSA this year with a fantastic team spirit was great, despite me having nowt to do with it....
JHI02 was brill, me and the meatmarket heard scotland were winning after the individual when out on the town (it wasn't the dj who announced it tho) and decided an early morning bus trip up there to provide support was needed, he took his bagpipes and i brought my stereo, we arrived just after the last legs had gone out and mhairi & co were piped down the run in. again, had nowt to do with it but just the team spirit was amazing.
personally, BOC&SOC96 m13 relay champions, me pyrat & joykok, those were the days...

The british relays last year on M18- when i went out on 2nd leg about 3mins down on the leader and was in about 4th place and wasnt sure who the other teams and their 2nd leg runners were. I caught Ed Cochrane in the forest and got away from him on a gaffle figuring he was probably running M18-. I had an OK run but was worried I'd lost time on the leaders leaving too much for Nick to do on last leg. The best feeling was when they announced I was in the lead on the run-in and it was just an immense feeling of relief!
