Re: London City Race
It's not the course lengths which are the problem - it's all the energetic post race activities people are suggesting.
This is only about the sixth time in my entire life that i have been to London proper so I want some good quality EVO which doesn't involve running

How about sitting down on the London Eye as it does a lazy circle through the sky? Try and pick out where you ran earlier.
Jump on one of the many tourist buses that will lazily snake you through the city picking out the attractions as you glide by. If you fancy a bit of mental stimulation along the way listen to the commentary on a foreign headphone setting and see if you can learn a language in the afternoon )
Alternatively, head to the new champagne bar in St Pancras, marvel at the re-built station and watch the world go by...

There we go Mrs H, I'll order up two celebratory glasses of champers at St Pancras for when we finish, covered in glory! Thanks T5

If you reread what I wrote you will see that I'm quite prepared to change if the distance isn't what I want to run; I don't have any hangups over running my age category. However, to do this I do need to know what the distances are, and having entered (and chosen the course based on the distance, not classes, provided) you have intimated some course distances are likely to be different.
I have to agree T5, St Pancras is definitely something to marvel at: a superb piece of restoration and development.

Hi, I'm the planner.
Please do continue to go by the distances quoted on the website. The distances are provisional and subject to final controlling. What Brooner was alluding to, is that we may slightly tweak the distances for the shorter courses, depending on various running tests we are doing at the moment. Parts of the City are actually very technical indeed - if you didn't think that urban orienteering courses could be technical, you may get a pleasant surprise in October! It's shaping to be a rather special event, and entries are filling up fast.
If you haven't seen it, here's a teaser of a bit of the map:
Stop talking, start running.

Might be a shock for a country girl like Mrs H... more than a typical C4 for a single glass of bubbly.
Map segment looks superb. So much so I can actually remember the buildings depicted. Navigation though is going to be extremely tricky. Can remember numerous times re-tracing steps when trying short cuts when I used to train there post work - and that was after having run the segment several times already

I like the bit on the flyer -
'which will have your course printed on you'
Which part will they print it on?

Just a guess, but I'd say that the map section is from around Barts Hospital / Smithfield.

Yes it is, the Bishop's Finger http://www.shepherd-neame.co.uk/pubs/pubs.php/bishopsfinger_london is on the west side. And my office is just off the map to the south.
Can't wait - it should be excellent! Don't worry about the distances - it's flat (apart from the stairs around the Barbican (and there are lifts and escalators if you're too tired!). There should only be tourists (Japanese or otherwise) around St Paul's, the end of the Millennium bridge and the Monument, an there's less of these now the summer's over. And, being a Saturday, there's no stilletto wearing secretaries or iphone-toting investment bankers blocking the streets either.
Hope to see some of you at the SOS Regional event at Hatfield Forest http://www.stragglers.info/event/20081012.php on the Sunday - that's flat too but with more trees. PM me if you'd like a lift from/to Stansted airport. It's only 5km to the assembly area (a mere warm up for you elites ) and you can enter online via oentires.com.
Maybe...

Re: London City Race
I pre-ran one of the City Race courses at the weekend, tremendous fun and tricky navigation! Its amazing what landmarks suddenly appear above and in front of you when you're so focused on the map.
Having not raced Venice, but wandered round with a map, I'd say it'll be as good as that (Simon E our controller certainly thinks so), and it has various bits that remind me of the Grand Bazaar too, it's going to be a real treat thats for sure.

Looking forward to the race next weekend! Is it going to make a page in 'Time Out' again, like the World Cup weekend/5-day did in 2005?
