Timed-out road crossings
OK, we've got a timed road crossing on the elite courses for this Sunday. Any opinions on it (other than that if the road's that bad then they should build a bridge )? I reckon it's a bit pointless really...

At the Scottish last year there was a timed crossing across the railway on Loch Vaa. It only applied to those who crossed at times the train came.
A right pain as a) you can't miss a great big steam train and b) I'd spent half the course gradually pulling away from someone on the open and then they caught me up whilst I was waiting.
But then sometimes it's great excuse for a breather and a bit of planning!

I dont think it really makes a difference, orienteer your ass off up to the crossing, orienteer your ass off after the road crossing, plan.
When they did this at the JK there there wern't any problems, were there?
I guess its the usual you have 1 minute, over this and its onto your time?

One issue at road crossings is should one be allowed to make use of the full two minutes? At JK2002 officials were pressurising you to punch as soon as you had crossed the road. The Day2 0007 details suggest something similar:
I'm afraid that I'm not convinced that this is fair and may increase the danger of runners lurking on one side of the road for a minute and a half and then having to cross a busy road in a smaller time window.
Of course I fall into the class of competitor who would welcome a 2 minute rest in the middle of a race.
Please respect the competition and continue your run as soon as you have crossed the road

i think i would rather keep my flow going in the race. im hoping that i will know what is coming after the crossing and have planned it already so i shouldnt need to stop. thats the plan anyway, it could all go wrong though!
it's all fun

I've got mixed opinions. On one hand by having a minute available causes lots of issues like is a minute actually going to be enough to cross the busy road, and is hanging about deliberately to be classified as cheating? On the other hand it removes any unfairness caused by having to wait for a car, or the temptation to just go for it in front of a car. E.g. JK this year - did anyone have to wait for a car? All the road crossings were clear for me but that may be cos it was almost dark...
I'm not sure you gain much from hanging around. I had one of these recently (Sherwood somewhere) and I think it was 2 minutes we had available. I did have to wait for a car, I planned rough routes for the rest of the course on the other side and waited for my breathing to reach vaguely normal levels before continuing. How long did it take? 32 seconds!
I don't think a map exchange is a fair way of doing it. Good orienteers and slow runners like me will plan a long way ahead and this takes some of the edge away from having that skill.
I guess I need to get off the fence on this one. If there's lots of people to be crossing and an important event and there's no way of avoiding a road crossing then I guess it should be timed-out of your run. I'd rather see an event with no road crossings though.
Rant over.

In JK 2002 they said there was a compulsary two minute wait at the road crossing... but late in the day the controller decided to change the decision. It wasn't very well communicated & I decided to take my full two minutes coz being old & fat I needed the rest... anyway the Marshall's cot a bit stressed, recognised me & said I was dq'd
