I dont yet have any answers on UK O rankings, but having read the threads on this topic, I think that looking at other sports might help in the formulation of the answer.
I have just started Orienteering as some winter exercise, whilst the weather is rubbish for gliding, at least in thermals. In gliding we have plenty of competing and rankings. At a basic level we have annual cross country competition rankings in the UK (BGA ladder http://www.bgaladder.co.uk/) and global with the OLC http://www3.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/g ... Id=1&today. Both of these are based on best six performances over the year. However the performances are not carried out in competition against other pilots. There are plenty of arcane calculations in the BGA ladder scoring.
At the competitive level, individual competitions tend to be hard fought week long events. There are complex rules for scoring invidivual days within a competition http://www.gliding.co.uk/bgainfo/competitions/news.htm, including issues such as the effect of the wind, the winning time, the number of competitors achieving a scoring flight etc etc, and further rules on scoring competitions for a national ranking. The later ranking is used for seeding into the national events. Unfortunately I am low on the reserve list for the national comp that I would like to enter this year. http://www.gliding.co.uk/bgainfo/compet ... ls/18m.htm. National ranking and the voting of top pilots is used in determining the British International team. More prestigious events score more highly than other events.
National and international events are used to create a world competitive ranking http://www.fai.org/gliding/rankings/index.php with further arcane scoring.
In terms of badges, there are international standards http://www.fai.org/gliding/sporting_code/sc3d
Plenty for ranking geeks, and by the way, the UK currently ranks number one.
I also row on my rowing machine to keep fit and there is an international ranking system http://www.concept2.com/sranking03/rankings.asp.
If glider pilots can handle windicapping and course shape factors, then maybe orienteering can invent some complex formula based on pace, distance with some terrrainicapping.
