Compass Sport
New issue arrived today. Looks good, especially the foreign events. Where shall we go this year? Actually we've committed to the O-Ringen, but that means we'll have to miss several other good sounding events

Can I put in a plug for the WMOC in Portugal? Sun, sea, fast dune terrain and the first ever World Masters' Sprint Championships as an extra bonus ... it will be the biggest Sprint race in the world so far too, with the Qualification and Final races both sampling old town narrow street terrain.
Oh, and your euro goes a very long way in Portugal as well.

Being a redhead I don't do hot
, so tend to head north unless it's out of the summer season. I fancy Iceland after Carol and John Pearce's good article a little while ago.

I don't have Compass Sport to hand right now, but when I flicked through the other day I recall seeing the White Rose listed in the holiday events section. I thought they weren't putting one on in 2008, due to hosting an alternative multi-day event in May....?

Re: Compass Sport
My spies in EBOR said they would probably still do an event due to public demand

Re: Compass Sport
You almost got 2 White Rose's for the price of one in 2008.
Ebor had asked for other Yorkshire clubs to put it on in 2008.
Aire had just got to the point of having fixed up a weekend of events, when Ebor decided after all to put the event on themselves.
We tried to change the Aire weekend to one in September, but it clashed with the Lincoln City Race, and as our weekend had a Town Race as an integral feature, we scrapped the plans.

Presumably that was the planned town race in Skipton? Is that going ahead as a stand alone event? It sounds as if it was going to be really fun.

That's the one.
No date found for it yet. Possibility of a summer time event combined with a sprint/chasing sprint at Leeds University on the Saturday. Both maps currently being surveyed and drawn. It would help to have a deadline to put the pressure on.

The complexities of finding a date which doesn't compromise someone else's event may defeat us again. We might yet have to look further ahead than this year.

This was one of the things the event review group's proposals for a flatter hierarchy (3-tiers) of events were designed to tackle. Sadly, these have been amended- and it doesn't look to me as if the rejigged proposals will do much to help.

How the new structure would work was never explained at the Development conference, and it still isn't clear how you can get all the different events that people want to stage into the fixtures calendar. Are you suggesting that Aire should just put on their event the same weekend as either the White Rose or the Lincoln City race ? If so, what is to stop them doing that anyway, other than the fact that competitors wouldn't be able to do both ?

Re: Compass Sport
There has never been any suggestion that Aire should stage an event at the same time as EBOR stage the White Rose.
ThIs year Ebor originally thought they would not be able to manage the White Rose. Aire took up the mantle at Ebor's request, but it took a while to get areas and a satisfactory weekend format sorted, by which time Ebor decided they would do the event after all. It's their regional event, and as with all regional events other clubs in the region don't plan simultaneaous alternative events.
The attempt to put on the Skipton race in September is more complex.
Aire have had a Regional event planned on the Sunday for a couple of years. Lincoln will have planned their city race with that knowledge. The problem arose when Aire switched the regional event to the Saturday and tried to introduce a C4 town race on the Sunday. We have clearly decided that safety considerations - primarily traffic volumes - dictate that this race should only be on a Sunday morning.
Aire wanted this race to be part of the 2008 City Series and petitioned Wattock to this effect. When we then noticed on the BOF Fixtures List that Lincoln had arranged their City race on the same day, we assumed that it must be part of the 2008 City Series, and emails to LOG and Wattock failed to dispel this false assumption. Aire did not feel that it would be reasonable for our race to clash with a race in the City series, which is why we contacted LOG so we could address the problem, and withdrew our plans.
It was only some weeks after we withdrew our plans for Skipton and returned the Regional Event to the Sunday that we learnt that the Lincoln race was not in the 2008 series.
Although we are not going to change our plans for that weekend again, I cannot see a problem with 2 towns almost 100 miles apart staging C4 town races, neither of which are part of a series. In many ways it seems more sensible than having a town race only 90 miles from a Regional Event on the same day, which is what we have got now. Nevertheless our attempt to arrange the race on the same day seemed to jar a few nerves in EMOA and BOF Fixtures circles. The tone of the written communication I saw seemed to be suggesting Aire were trying to pull fast one! The communications we have had from LOG have been helpful.
