ah.. so much fun. Stayed up all night watching, long night was especially exciting watching Nick hanging on and then coming through to lead the pack in in 2nd. then our 7th guy collapsed in the forest. when i got home i slept for 15 hours. What do you mean bring on next year m? Bring on Jukkola! except i'll probably be dropped for Jukkola but it'll still be great.

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

England Select - the post mortem.
1st leg - Marky's headlight battery holder broke within 200m of starting, so he spent the whole race holding the battery. The connector pulled out, and the light didn't work much when he needed it! Still, he finished, not too far down, but quite pissed off.
2nd leg - Jez fell down a crag, smashed his compass, and badly cut his wrist. Somehow managed to finish the leg without a compass, and without quite a lot of blood, but mispunched whilst worrying about other things like not passing-out.
3rd & 4th legs - Bill & Charlie both got round ok, but took longer than expected. Quotes like "that was the hardest orienteering I've ever done".
5th leg - Neil does a reasonable time on the long-night leg. Only find out later that apparently he mis-punched, but he doesn't know where. Nobody too bothered, since we're disqualified anyway.
6th leg - I get round ok, but by now it's getting light, and hence not nearly so difficult.
7th, 8th, 9th legs - Not sure how Dave, Mike and Roger get on, cos I'm asleep!
10th leg - Tim starts the last leg before the mass start (but only just), and we finish in a team time of just under 15 hours.
Overall, pretty disappointing team performance, but an experience anyway. The organisation, commentary and massive video screen were brilliant, especially when Brits were featuring.
The highlight was seeing Modum 1 at the top of the list on the first leg intermediate control, and someone said "Modum 1 - that's the team Ed runs for isn't it?" Someone else said, "Yep, but I thought Ed was running first leg". A few seconds later... "Bloody hell, that is Ed!". And sure enough, there he was on the big video screen.

Yeah - fantastic weekend had by all. Don't think anyone's emphasized quite how incredibly well some of our Brits did - shout out to Mhairi, Kim and Helen in the 5th placed Ravinen team and Mr Barrable pulling them up to second for a short time in the men's. And cool shout out Brooner wondered who was behind that! Not sure I heard a sue-eee for us guys though!
As for our teams, the JOK girls would like some competition in future - we were pretty chuffed although I reckon that if I'd have actually read my map on the way to number one and gone to the right control we'd have made the top 150. Great run from Christine Currie on the first leg - the positions don't show just how close she was to the squaddie girls.
As for the blokes, Dave C had a nightmare on the first leg losing the pack early on leaving Jon E on second going out with the leaders of the 3rd leg! Unfortch this left poor old JonX alone in the forest for third, and the last km proved a little tough. Solid runs from most of the rest, Jon M, Duncan, Pete H and co but a special shout out to Prof Ackland, whipping a lot of the young whippersnappers on his mass start last leg to do a pretty impressive 16km time. Despite the miss punch disappointment they're already sounding like taking it on again next year.
And Melons - they're nuts if they drop you - fingers crossed hey?!
